Winter Uniforms –  Can you please help your child to check the weather before dressing for school each morning?  Some children are coming in to school dressed up for snowy weather but the temperatures are still getting up to mid twenties. Please also note that black shoes, not trainers, are required, as are white trainers only for the P.E. uniform.
Stationery – Most children are equipped with the stationery they need, however some are missing some essentials. Please make sure that your child has all of the stationery that they need and that items such as glue sticks get replenished.
Camp Photos – These are still available in the Google folder which we have shared with the children in all classes, so if you’d like to see more of the footage we took please check in with your child.

At the Theatre

IMG_4480On Thursday morning, an excited bunch of Year 6 students set out across the harbour to go and watch the fabulous “Blood Brothers” musical. The workshops the children took part in last week had really gotten them excited about the show. The thought of seeing former Beacon Hill School students (as well as current teachers and parents!) performing in the musical added to the buzz. The children really impressed us with how they conducted themselves as a well-mannered and supportive audience and how the responded sensibly and appropriately to the story.

On the Sports’ Field

Year 6 students have continued their participation in the winter sports season, with representatives taking part in the Mixed Netball Tournament at Kellet School. Tournaments like these are a fantastic way to teach the children valuable life lessons about how to enjoy the moment and try their best, regardless of the result.

facdecbae80c17d030c8beb94625b2eeThe playground has seen its own share of sporting drama this week too! The Y6 girls took on the Y6 boys in a football tournament. Great sports-man/woman-ship was seen across the year group. Congratulations to the winners and commiserations to the losers. (Better luck next time, girls!)

In Classes

As the unit of inquiry has drawn to a close across the curriculum, this week has been all about sharing our learning. Whether in group discussions, on our student produced websites or in summative tasks, the children have had many opportunities to think about, and demonstrate, how knowledgeable they have become.

Year 6 Unit of Inquiry 2

Transdisciplinary Theme : Where we are in place in time

Central Idea : Past civilisations can be used to make connections to present day societies

Lines of Inquiry  – We will inquire into…

  • characteristics of past civilisations
  • the way present day societies have been influenced by civilisations from the past
  • connections between past discoveries and modern day advances

Concepts : form, function, connection

Learner Profile : knowledgeable, thinker

Attitudes : enthusiasm, appreciation

IMG_7110 IMG_7111 IMG_7113

Central Idea : The operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are related to each other and can be modelled in different ways.

This week the children have put their skills into practice by tackling various problem-solving tasks. This has involved evaluating which operations are needed, as well as making choices about which strategies to use. The week’s maths culminated in summative tasks for all number groups and a celebration of their progress in operations.

Strand Maths – Data Handling

Central Idea : Data can be presented effectively for valid interpretation and communication.

The children have had fun applying their data handling skills to practical tasks, presenting data gathered about Year 6 camp for example. These skills will come in handy during Exhibition time next year!

The last week of this unit saw the completion of a range of historical narrative. Descriptive language was used to help the reader really gain a sense of the time and place the stories were set.

IMG_7072We have also been developing the comprehension strategy of Determining Importance. This has helped select relevant information and summarise our findings when researching.

As always, buddy spelling tests are held every Friday so Spelling Journals are an absolute necessity for Fridays. Spelling Journals need to be back in to school everyday to enable students to work on the spelling investigations in the back of the journal throughout the week and also to add personal spelling words to as they arise during the weekdays.

Spelling : Spelling Journal homework – 3 practice spelling tests to be conducted under the supervision of an adult at home, daily spelling practice and any additional journal tasks set by the class teacher.

Reading : Weekly reflections to be completed at least once a week. Children need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.

Number Maths :

  • Miss Fearn – Mathletics!  I have set you all new tasks…..enjoy 🙂
  • Miss Fisher – Play and review a range of maths games following the directions on the Google.doc that has been shared with you.
  • Mr Hoskins – Complete Mathletics tasks and think about about where you see fractions, decimals and percentages in real-life. Bring in any examples that you find!
  • Mrs Davis – First watch this short video on adding and subtracting negative numbers https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/absolute-value/adding_subtracting_negatives/v/adding-subtracting-negative-numbers and then try this quiz
  •  http://www.thegreatmartinicompany.com/negativenumbers/negative-number-addition.html

UOI –  As one unit draws to a close and another begins, students have TWO sets of UOI homework this week (but don’t worry, they’re both a lot of fun!).

  1. Take action by continuing to work on and refine your Past Civilisation websites.
  2. Take the quiz on the below to find out how much you know about science compared with the rest of the population!

Thought of the Week : Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less. –  Marie Curie
