Winter Uniforms –  There have been days that have been a little cooler than others over the last week or so.  Can you please help your child to check the weather before dressing for school each morning?  Some children are coming in to school dressed up for snowy weather but the temperatures are still getting up to 30 degrees on some days.  Can you please try not to dress the children in layer upon layer as they are getting very hot, sweaty and smelly throughout the day.
Theatre Trip – We are heading out to see ‘Blood Brothers’ at the theatre next Thursday…can you help your child to please bring back their permission slips as soon as possible?  There will be no need to cancel Delifresh as we will be back in school in time for lunch.  All children will need to wear full school uniform on Thursday please.
Stationery – Most children are equipped with the stationery they need, however some are missing some essentials. Please make sure that your child has all of the stationery that they need and that items such as glue sticks get replenished.
Camp Photos – All the teachers worked really hard over the camp week to get as many photos as possible of the children.  Every child was so involved in all their outdoor pursuits on and (usually) off the OB site that it became very difficult to ‘catch up’ with them all.  We tried our best and we do apologise if your child was not featured enough.  We had one small room available to us where we could upload photos and whilst we were doing that, we were inevitability not out and about with the kids. We are currently collating the photos from all the phones and cameras that the staff took on the camp and are uploading them to a Google folder which we have shared with the children in all classes, so if you’d like to see more of the footage we took please check in with your child.

Blood Brothers Workshops – This week we had our ‘Blood Brothers’ theatre Workshop working with Mrs H. from Hong Kong Youth Arts.  We had a lot of fun working on a variety of drama activities.  We did some ‘Strike a Pose’ and ‘Still Image’ drama warm-ups and we also learned a little about the theatre production that we will see next Thursday.  These workshops certainly gave us an insight into the story and the characters that we will be seeing next week in the performance.

Visiting Musician – Today we had Scott Darlow, a visiting musician, come to BHS to work will us.  He was an ex-BHS student and we really enjoyed his assembly this morning for the whole school and this afternoon the Years 6’s did some work with him together in the hall. It was really enjoyable listening to his music and listening to what he had to say!

We are continuing to explore operations. Children across the year group have been inquiring into how the operations can be used in different ways and some have taken part in rich problem solving tasks, explaining their thinking and understanding.  We have also worked on our Fractions, Decimals and Percentages pre-assessments as they will be our next Number UOI starting in a couple of weeks.

We are continuing to research and plan our historical fiction stories. This unit is really shaping up to be something special as our Year 6 writers begin to write and develop their own stories. Everyone is looking forward to completing their stories over the remaining week of this UOI.

As always, buddy spelling tests are held every Friday so Spelling Journals are an absolute necessity for Fridays. Spelling Journals need to be back in to school everyday to enable students to work on the spelling investigations in the back of the journal throughout the week and also to add personal spelling words to as they arise during the weekdays.

Spelling : Spelling Journal homework – 3 practice spelling tests to be conducted under the supervision of an adult at home, daily spelling practice and any additional journal tasks set by the class teacher.

Reading : Weekly reflections to be completed at least once a week. Children need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.

Number Maths :

  • Miss Fearn – ‘Rounding Riddles’ : rounding revision and ‘Aging Families’ : problem solving task using the make a list strategy.  Please don’t forget to continue to work on your Number (and Strand) Mathletics tasks.
  • Miss Fisher – Decimals and Negative Number review
  • Mr Hoskins – Fraction Frenzy – this page looks at adding and subtracting different fractions. When you mark Holly’s homework be sure to explain how to make corrections to any errors.
  • Mrs Davis –  Strategy Game – Got It Play the game the standard way and remind yourself of the strategy discussed in class. Change the settings a find a strategy for two more versions of the game. Email me your findings. davisc3@beaconhill.edu.hk

UOI –  All classes are to continue working on their group Civilisation Weebly pages.  (Take brief notes about your topic, write in your own words and add to your individual pages. Remember to cite your sources of all websites, books, magazines etc. that you have used!)

Thought of the Week : You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own, and you know what you know. And you are the guy who’ll decide where to go. – Dr Seuss
