Year 6 Camp
Thank you to the parents who have returned all of the camp forms and payments. However, we are still missing some children’s paperwork. This information will need to be passed on to Outward Bound next week so please make sure all documents and cheques are in as soon as possible.
Camp Tips
With Camp fast approaching it is vital that the children check that they have everything they need on the equipment check list. All belongings must be clearly named.
Children are expected to make their bed at camp. If they are not already doing this at home, now would be a good time to start practising!
Unit of Inquiry reports
Our first unit report went live on the Gateway on Friday 21st October. Please find some time with your child to read through it. The report will give you and your child a clear overview of where their learning is and areas that need developing.
Mandarin Parent Consultations
It is important that you sign up for one of the Mandarin Parent Consultation time-slots that are coming up soon (please see the Dates for the Diary section of this update). The Year 6 children will be sitting their Mandarin Benchmarking tests in January or February and this is your chance to talk to the Mandarin teachers to find out how they are doing and how you can help them. Just be aware that the next Mandarin consultation is after this very important secondary bench-marking test…..so you need to get in now!
Central Idea : Leaders influence communities to affect change.
Lines of Inquiry – We will inquire into…
- The traits of leadership
- The responsibilities of leadership
- The impact of decision making
Concepts …
Form – We will understand that leaders have a range of different characteristics.
Responsibility – We will understand that with leadership there comes responsibility
Function – We will understand the purpose and impact that leadership can have on us
Learner Profile : principled, courageous
Attitudes : commitment, integrity
This week the children held class discussions using a new lollipop technique, to create a list of leadership qualities that great leaders possess. They did a ‘fast write’ based on their homework research and they made notes on the biographies of famous leaders.
Central Idea – Conversion of units and measurements allows us to make sense of the world we live in.
Next week the children in Year 6 will be inquiring into Volume. Through investigation they will develop rules to find the volume of cuboids. They will also identify and describe the relationships between area and volume and between volume and capacity.
Number Maths
Central Idea – Operations
The children have continued to look at maths with an open ended approach. We have introduced the students to the notion of remainders and made connections between multiplication and division. Children have found that creating patterns can help them to communication and make sense of their solutions.
Spelling : Please keep up with the home spelling tests. The children should be tested on their words at home 3 times per week ready for our buddy test on Friday. Any words that the children spell incorrectly during the buddy test on Friday will get carried over to next week’s ‘Words I need to learn…’ All children need to remember to bring back the Spelling Journals each day during the week.
Reading : Each child should be reading for at least 20 mins each night. Don’t forget to complete your weekly reflection in your Reading Diaries – due each Friday!
UOI
All children are working on their iTime inquiry. The deadline for this presentation is the 28th November.
