Welcome Back!
It’s great to see everyone’s smiling faces again. The students have come back with lots of energy and enthusiasm for learning and we can’t wait to get going with the remainder of the first term.
In Monday’s assembly, the students were reminded of Box of Hope and were invited to begin choosing and packing items to give to those in need this Christmas. We really hope to see our Year 6s take action and get involved in helping children less fortunate than themselves. Why not visit www.boxofhope.org to find out more about this worthy cause? On the website you can also find suggested items to pack, as well as forms to attach to each box. The deadline for bringing in boxes is Wednesday 4th November, so let’s get packing!
Our sporty Y6 children have been very active representing BHS at various sporting events this week. On Tuesday the netball team had fun during their friendly matches against Kellet and Kowloon Junior School. On Wednesday the girls football team took park in a tournament at Hong Lok Yuen International School while the boys’ teams played on Friday, as part of the tournament hosted by Discovery Bay International School, held at King’s Park. Congratulations to all who took part and tried their best. We hope you are proud of your efforts, boys and girls!
Looking ahead to next week, we have the Year 6 Bake Sale on Tuesday. We would be grateful if each student could contribute 8-10 individual cakes or cookies for the event. Baking at home can be lots of fun as well as a great way to bring learning to life as children get hands on experience of measuring, ratios, instructional texts (your cookbook!) and even science – the chemistry of baking!

Year 6 Unit of Inquiry 2
Transdisciplinary Theme : Where we are in place in time
Central Idea : Past civilisations can be used to make connections to present day societies
Lines of Inquiry – We will inquire into…
- characteristics of past civilisations
- the way present day societies have been influenced by civilisations from the past
- connections between past discoveries and modern day advances
Concepts : form, function, connection
Learner Profile : knowledgeable, thinker
Attitudes : enthusiasm, appreciation
Number Maths – Operations
Central Idea : The operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are related to each other and can be modelled in different ways.
Across the year group students have been looking at the operations of multiplication and division, with some exploring ways to use these operations when working with fractions and others practising these operations with whole numbers and decimals.
Strand Maths – Data Handling
Central Idea : Data can be presented effectively for valid interpretation and communication.
This week we continued on with our Data Handling. All classes have been working on an assortment of data tasks and investigations and will continue to do so for the next few weeks.
Our learning around historical fiction has allowed us to explore the history of Hong Kong from a different angle as we have generated ideas and language that can be used to describe different settings and characters from Hong Kong’s past. We are looking forward to seeing what story ideas the children come up with in the coming weeks!
As always, buddy spelling tests are held every Friday so Spelling Journals are an absolute necessity for Fridays. Spelling Journals need to be back in to school everyday to enable students to work on the spelling investigations in the back of the journal throughout the week and also to add personal spelling words to as they arise during the weekdays.
Spelling : Spelling Journal homework – 3 practice spelling tests to be conducted under the supervision of an adult at home, daily spelling practice and any additional journal tasks set by the class teacher.
Reading : Weekly reflections to be completed at least once a week. Children need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.
Number Maths :
- Mr Hoskins – Fraction Partitions worksheet and Mathletics, please make sure you are up to date with this so I can set you new tasks. Thanks.
- Miss Fearn – ‘Square Secrets’ recalling squares of multiples to 10 corresponding to the squares of numbers to 12, and problem solving activity….’Take the Challenge’ open ended problem solving
- Miss Fisher – Compensation Strategy worksheet
- Mrs Davis – Subtracting decimals worksheet
UOI : As the children have been using Google so well to show their learning, we have another Google.doc for them to work on. This week, students must consider which civilisations they think are the most important. They will need to justify their choices by doing a little background reading about each one and summarising their thoughts, as well as listing the sources of information they have used, in the table on the class Google.doc. The class teacher will share the doc with the students. This piece of work is due back to school on ….Friday 6th November, 2015.
