Portfolios – please return all portfolios back to school as soon as possible so that we can keep adding to it over the year.
Year 6 Arts Taster Day – this year the Year 6s will take part in an Arts Taster Day coming up in February or early March. We will be offering various ‘arts’ lessons for the children to choose from. If you have a particular skill in the arts or know someone who could volunteer we would love to have you in to take a couple of lessons with a small group. It could be anything….dance, origami, collage, musical instrument, photography, sewing, puppetry etc absolutely anything! Just let us know and we can give you a little more info.
Weather and Clothing – With the recent change in weather can we make sure that children are dressed appropriately for school. Layers are a good way of allowing the children to be comfortable, giving them the option to adjust their clothing when necessary. But please, not too many layers!
Layering your child with too much outerwear can actually make them colder. That’s because excess layers can cause your child to sweat, which makes their clothes wet, which allows the cold and wind to bring their temperature down.

Strand Maths
Central Idea – Consolidating what we know of geometric concepts allow us to make sense of and interact with our world.
The children have been inquiring into how they can change the size of a shape or drawing. They have concluded that it is necessary to use a scale. The amount that an original image has been enlarged or reduced is called a scale factor, or an enlargement/reduction factor.
Number Maths
Central Idea – Fractions, decimal fractions and percentages are ways of representing whole-part relationships
An inquiry into…
– decimal fractions and the number system
– how ratio is used to make comparisons
– sequences involving whole numbers, fractions and decimals
Our current unit text type is Historical Fiction. Historical Fiction is defined as movies and novels in which a story is made up but is set in the past and sometimes borrows true characteristics of the time period in which it is set. Please try and encourage your child to find a story that excites or interests them to read at home.
- Music on the Bamboo Radio – Martin Booth
- The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas – John Boyne
- Kensuke’s Kingdom – Michael Morpurgo
- The Wreck of Zanzibar – Michael Morpurgo
- Goodnight Mister Tom – Michelle Margoiran
- Break of Dark – Robert Westall
- Chinese Cinderella – Adeline Yen Mah
Some children are getting through these texts and are up to reading their third book! And…some need a little more encouragement – could you please ask your child about their Historical Fiction text and how they are going with it?
We will be looking at the Historical Fiction Success Criteria in the coming weeks and deconstructing good examples. We will also be focusing on poignant scenes from ‘Empire of the Sun’ and trying to write our own moments. This is a particularly tricky writing genre but it gives the children a chance to shine and really showcase their writing skills.
- The children are starting to make decisions on their second I-TIme inquiry. They should be getting their thinking caps on and deciding what they would like to inquire into. Once they have chosen an area of passion, curiosity, interest or wondering, they need to do some background reading, research and note taking.
- Children should be continuing with their weekly spelling and reading commitments at home.
- Don’t forget to continue on with Mathletics and Reading Eggs
