Empire of the Sun (PG)
1987, Directed by Steven Spielberg
We are continuing to watch ‘Empire of the Sun’ as part of our introduction to Historical Fiction.
Story Overview – An aristocratic British youth is separated from his family at the start of World War II after the Japanese Army invades British controlled areas of China. Reduced to living on the street and fighting for food, the youth is eventually interned in a Japanese POW camp for British civilians. Here, admiration quickly develops both for captured American pilots and the Japanese themselves. When the war ends, the boy, torn from everything he knew, attempts to again find his parents.
Please let your class teacher know if there are any issues with your son or daughter watching this movie.
Gentle Reminder.……please don’t let the kids forget our wonderful EAs Mrs Chand and Mrs J when the children are picking out Christmas pressies and cards this year – they work so hard with us and all the children, it would be lovely for the children to show their appreciation.
Lines of Inquiry – We will inquire into…
- characteristics of past civilisations and societies (form)
- the ways in which our society has been influenced by past societies (function)
- connections between past discoveries and modern day advances (connection)
Concepts : form, function, connection
Learner Profile : knowledgeable, thinker, reflective
Attitudes : enthusiasm, appreciation
This week we have been unscrambling the central idea and getting acquainted with our new UOI – Past Civilisations Can Be Used To Make Connections To Present Day Societies. We have had many discussions about the past and 6H were lucky enough to hear some moving stories about the blitz that took place in London during WWII. Mr Rampton’s mother had first had experience of what it was like living through the war, it is hard to believe how different life was and how lucky we are today, especially in the safe haven of Hong Kong. Please take the time to talk to your children about our new unit. If you, any family members or friends have lived through any significant events in history then please share them with the children, it will really help bring this unit to life.
Strand Maths
Central Idea – Consolidating what we know of geometric concepts allow us to make sense of and interact with our world.
As well as starting a new unit we have been tying up loose ends from our previous Unit of Inquiry. Including looking at angles and analysing survey results from I-Time and Outward Bound.
Number Maths
Central Idea – Fractions, decimal fractions and percentages are ways of representing whole-part relationships
An inquiry into…
– decimal fractions and the number system
– how ratio is used to make comparisons
– sequences involving whole numbers, fractions and decimals
- Music on the Bamboo Radio – Martin Booth
- The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas – John Boyne
- Kensuke’s Kingdom – Michael Morpurgo
- The Wreck of Zanzibar – Michael Morpurgo
- Goodnight Mister Tom – Michelle Margoiran
- Break of Dark – Robert Westall
- Chinese Cinderella – Adeline Yen Mah
Some children are really ripping through these texts and are up to reading their third book! And…some need a little more encouragement – could you please ask your child about their Historical Fiction text and how they are going with it?
We will be looking at the Historical Fiction Success Criteria in the coming weeks and deconstructing good examples of HF. We will also be focussing on poignant scenes from ‘Empire of the Sun’ and trying to write our own moments. This is a particularly tricky writing genre but it gives the children a chance to shine and really showcase their writing skills.
The children can continue to research their chosen NGOs over the holidays. Here is the list, just in case they need reminding.
- Bethune House
- HK Justice Centre
- Cambodia Indo-China Starfish Foundation
- Angels for Orphans
- Ark Eden
- Plastic Free Seas

In the new year we will be diving in to our second I-TIme inquiry. Year 6 students are required to get their thinking caps on and decide what they would like to inquire in to. Once they have decided, they need to do some background reading on their chosen area.
