Mandarin Parent Consultations
It is important that you sign up for one of the Mandarin Parent Consultation time-slots that are coming up soon (please see the Dates for the Diary section of this update). The Year 6 children will be sitting their Mandarin Benchmarking tests in January or February and this is your chance to talk to the Mandarin teachers to find out how they are doing and how you can help them. Just be aware that the next Mandarin consultation is after this very important secondary bench-marking test…..so you need to get in now!
How to Help Your Child Get Ready for Camp….
- practice making their own bed
- show them how to hang their towel (so it will dry for the next shower!)
- get them to decorate their wet shoes…so they can be easily distinguished from the 89 other pairs hanging about!
- give them a plastic bag to bring home their wet clothes in
- ensure they know which clothes belong to them…and make sure they are named clearly
- be positive about camp with them and be excited for them
Other Camp Info….
- Here’s the link to the camp photo folder……http://beaconhill.edu.hk/y6camp
- Please be understanding of the amount or lack of photos of your child. We will try our best to do as many as we can but with 8 very different groups in 8 very different venues it can be tricky. Also, there is no wi-fi service around the camp so we are relying on our own data packages – I completely ran out of data last year because of the camp week so once again we would really love your understanding on this matter.
- We have all the info about which children are being collected on Friday when we return. If it changes please email your class teacher during the weekend or next week. I would imagine we will get back for about 2pm as we are due to leave OB at 1:30pm.
- Please send in all of your child’s required medicine on Monday – pls give to Mr Pheasant on Monday morning and not Nurse Rosalind.
Arts in the Park
On the Saturday after camp (12th November) our BHS Chamber Choir is performing at Arts in the Park. Arts in the Park is a fabulous arts festival that takes place each year in Victoria Park, Causeway Bay. If you’d like to pop along you can watch our choir who are performing at 2:40pm….and you can also take part in some fantastic arts and crafts activities. Any choir members need to meet Mr Gibson there at 1:30/1:45pm. Good luck to all our performers!
Reading Workshops – here’s some workshops offered by our fabulous English team here at BHS.
Lines of Inquiry – We will inquire into…
- The traits of leadership
- The responsibilities of leadership
- The impact of decision making
Concepts …
Form – We will understand that leaders have a range of different characteristics.
Responsibility – We will understand that with leadership there comes responsibility
Function – We will understand the purpose and impact that leadership can have on us
Learner Profile : principled, courageous
Attitudes : commitment, integrity
Strand Maths – Measurement
Central Idea – Conversion of units and measurements allows us to make sense of the world we live in.
Year 6 will be continuing to inquire into Volume. Through investigation they will develop rules to find the volume of cuboids. They will also identify and describe the relationships between area and volume and between volume and capacity.
Number Maths
Central Idea – Operations
We have continued with our problem-solving approach to operations this week. In providing these open-ended tasks we can ensure that the children are being challenged and enriched and it gives us the opportunity to work with individuals and groups in our class who may need clarification on certain aspects or the concepts and outcomes. Some of the solutions to these problems that the children are coming up with are really creative and it shows their ‘outside-the-box’ thinking.
Homework will be suspended next week whilst we are on OB Camp.
Spelling : Please keep up with the home spelling tests. The children should be tested on their words at home 3 times per week ready for our buddy test on Friday. Any words that the children spell incorrectly during the buddy test on Friday will get carried over to next week’s ‘Words I need to learn…’ All children need to remember to bring back the Spelling Journals each day during the week.
Reading : Each child should be reading for at least 20 mins each night. Don’t forget to complete your weekly reflection in your Reading Diaries – due each Friday!
Maths : Please continue on with all the Mathletics task that your teachers have set. You may also need to spend some time devising your survey and getting it checked by your teacher before you either email it out or head out into the field to collect your data.
Thought of the Week :
