This week we spent some time introducing our new UOI and attempted to unscramble the Central Idea and think really hard about what each word means. We also had great fun on our unit provocation! We attempted to build a spaghetti and marshmallow tower…..testing out our collaboration and conflict management skills. Check out the photos. We also completed our pre-assessments for this UOI and thought deeply about what we know already about ‘conflict’ and ‘quality of human life’.
Central Idea – Conversion of units and measurements allows us to make sense of the world we live in.
Number Maths – Place Value
Central Idea – The base 10 place value system extends infinitely in two directions.
Our units for the start of this year are ‘Measurement’ for Strand Maths and ‘Place Value’ for Number Maths. We will have 3 differentiated Number Maths lessons this year in Year 6 and the children were busy this week completing their pre-assessment so we can sort out their new Number groups which will begin on Monday.
This week we mainly worked really hard on doing assessments! Spelling tests and written summer recounts dominated our English lessons this week but we did spend some time writing about ourselves and getting to know each other.
Learning Centre – we all visited the Learning Centre this week to introduce us back in the the library and were given reminders about how we go about borrowing this year. Ms Jeves taught us some amazing words this week….ask your child! Had you heard of them before?
Spelling : spelling activities in spelling journals will come home shortly
Reading : Reading homework and reading reflections are due to start soon
UOI – The children need to please make covers for their red UOI folders and for their portfolio. These should be done in either Google Docs or Google Drawings and need to be printed at home and brought into school soon!
