Year 5 have enjoyed exploring our Mind Up through Drama, Yoga, Art, English and Probability this week. We identified that Yoga can help us to find calm and relax through a series of poses, as well as helping us concentrate on our breathing. Our vocabulary for different emotion words has broadened this week as we have shared our knowledge about a wealth of words and deepened our understanding about what they mean. It has also been a busy week as we continue to make connections between our own experiences and feelings and identifying the link between the Ínside Out’ movie and this unit of inquiry.

Mindful Schools

Transdisciplinary Theme: Who We Are

Central Idea

We can understand and develop our emotional well being to lead a balanced life.

Lines of Inquiry

  • Managing and understanding our emotional wellbeing (form, function)
  • Developing and maintaining positive relationships (connection)
  • Ways to apply mindful behaviours (connection)
  • Ever wondered what the brain does, how it works, or how it controls the rest of the body? We are going to start exploring the theories of the brain and look at the important role it plays when dealing with emotions. The children have shared some lovely ideas about what they do to feel calm and relaxed, so we will explore this further through Mindfulness in education.

Watch the clip ‘Just Breathe’ and focus on the part when someone describes her brain from bring angry to calm being like a jar of glitter.
Can you think of a different and creative way to describe/ represent/ explain what your brain feels like when you are angry and are trying to get it to settle and relax again.
You can draw a diagram, create a picture/ poster, presentation, model or just write it down on paper or in a Google Doc.
Please make sure your homework is emailed/ sent or handed in to your teacher by Wednesday.

Children need to be bringing their own hats to school each day. They are not permitted to play in uncovered areas at break times if they do not wear a hat. Please make sure they are clearly named.

A reminder that no nuts are allowed for snacks, and that whenever possible snacks are healthy and nutritious.
