International Food Fair
Following the success of our Market Day, this week, our Year 5 children have been asked to create and run the Hall games during the International Food Fair. All the children have been asked to join a group to help with planning and creating a game. If they are able to help on the night then the children have been asked to stay in school on Friday to prepare the Hall for the games. We will supervise the children until the start of the fair at 5pm. If you do not want your child(ren) to stay after school on Friday then please let Mr. Pheasant know so that we are aware. You may also contact Mr. Pheasant if you have any questions about the running of the Hall games.
A huge congratulations to all the Big Business groups who did an amazing job on Market Day. It was a fantastic celebration of all the children’s hard work and dedication. Classrooms were buzzing with activity in the run up to Market Day with groups busily finishing off products, creating jingles, finalising posters, prices and job roles for Market Day. All the effort paid off – Well done Year 5!
This week has also been Book Week and children have been fortunate enough to have had author and illustrator Chris White speaking to them, sharing his experiences about what it is like to be an author. To celebrate book week, there have been a number of lunchtime activities taking place which children have had the opportunity to go along to.
Central Idea:
Energy can be converted and transformed to support everyday life.
Lines of Inquiry:
- Transformation of energy (function)
- Renewable and non-renewable energy (connection)
- Sustainable energy use in everyday life (connection)
We have been finishing off our work on data handling and fractions, decimals and percentages and we have been considering how our projected profit changes, depending on the percentage increase or decrease of our set price. This helped children to decide in advance how much they can afford to drop their prices to ensure they are still making profit.
We have started looking at the properties of 2D shape through reading the book The Greedy Triangle. Children have started to describe and visualise 2D shapes using technical vocabulary.
In connection with book week, children have used ideas connected with the story The Greedy Triangle to create their own picture story about shapes which they will share with their Year 1 Buddies. Children have worked in pairs and have come up with some extremely imaginative ideas to share the properties of 2D shapes with their buddies. Some children created these by hand, whilst some used their ICT skills to create online versions. The children are looking forward to sharing these with their buddies on Tuesday.
No Golden Book this week due to author visit.
Look at the website below and begin to create your own wonderings connected with Energy. Be ready to share these with the class and add them to our Wonder Walls

Dress Up Day – Monday 20th March
Our traditional dress up day will take place on the 20th March. All the children and staff in school will dress up in costume. We encourage the children to be creative and imaginative with their costume. So please try and avoid football kits or the children coming as themselves!
To celebrate the collaboration between books and Maths, this year the children can choose to dress as a book character or something maths related.
Photo competition- Closing date 21st March
Seeing and understanding pattern is very important in Maths for many reasons, for example to improve our knowledge of shape and space, to help estimation and solve problems in algebra. Pattern is also very important in the English language, it can be seen in spelling, sentence structure and of course poetry. Many stories follow a pattern too and understanding this can help develop children’s comprehension. This year our photo competition celebrates pattern.
Your child needs to take a photo on the theme of pattern and send it to Ms Jeves at the following address: jevese2@beaconhill.edu.hk Please can you make sure the subject header for the photo contains your child’s name and class. Closing date: 21st March.
Important Reminder – School Snacks and Lunches
Beacon Hill School have a number of children who are allergic to nuts. When preparing snacks and lunches for your children please avoid using nut products like Nutella and peanut butter. We thank you for your cooperation.
Please return any sold raffle tickets and remember more can always be requested.
