Year 5 Update Wk 24
Wednesday 9th March- Year 5 to Sham Shui Po
Friday 18th March- International Food Fair
Please contact class teachers if you are able to help with our buying trip to Sham Shui Po on the 9th March. Like before, please provide your child with a packed lunch as we will be leaving school at 11:30am and will be returning to school at approximately 2pm. Children will have an early lunch and will eat their snack when they arrive back at school.
As the children will be buying a large volume of goodies, it is advisable that they bring their own sturdy shopping bags. From experience the bags provided by the sellers have a tendency to break or split.
Reminder!!! Food Fair is coming up very soon, important information to follow.
Big Business Unit Presentations – We need your help!!
As part of the big business unit the children will be making presentations to a panel of ‘experts’ on Tuesday, March 22nd and Wednesday, March 23rd in school. The children will be presenting their business plans and explaining their strategies for the market day which will be held after the Easter holidays. We would like to invite any parents who feel that they would be able to spare the time, and share their expertise, to be a part of the panel. If you can attend then please email Mr. Pheasant (chad.pheasant@bhs.edu.hk) with details of when you would be available and he will contact you nearer the time to confirm. The more parents we have the better!
What a busy week we have had in Year 5! Our big business unit is now in full swing, with our budding entrepreneurs working hard to think of the next big trend to hit BHS! We had a very successful pricing trip which inspired our groups to think of creative and interesting ways to make a profit. We were very impressed with the year group’s excellent behaviour and wonderful communication skills that they used to negotiate and set prices with the sellers.
We would like to extend our appreciation to the wonderful parent helpers, who not only accompanied the children around the streets of Sham Shui Po but also offered great advice which proved invaluable to a lot of our groups. Your support and patience, especially with the buses was greatly appreciated!
Central Idea: There are many factors at work within a marketplace
Lines of Inquiry:
- Different marketplaces and their purposes
- Components in marketplace
- Research and marketing
Our Key Concepts are:
Function
Reflection
The children will reflect on their pricing trip and compose an action plan with an outline of the products or services that they are going to sell. The will apply and interview for the specific job titles within their group.
In Strand Maths we will be exploring the concept of Data Handling and making connections with the prices and quantities collected in Sham Shui Po.
Number Math will consist of introducing the conversion of data into fractions, decimals and percentages and how these can be represented in various graphs and charts.
Year 5 will focus on the features of persuasive letter writing and use their skills to compose a cover letter for their application for the roles within their big business.
The children are encouraged to bring in examples or links to examples of persuasive letters from daily life.
