Another busy week for Year 5 which started off with a great provocation for our new unit of inquiry. In groups children had a limited time to purchase materials and make packaging for a product which was sold across the year group. Teachers gave special awards to those showing extra creativity or understanding of the task. The students had the opportunity to use our own BHS currency to buy from stalls. Afterwards each group had to calculate any profits or losses!!
Central Idea:
There are many factors at work in a market place
Next week children will be creating and conducting their own surveys to help collect data about the potential market for their products. They will form their business groups, assign roles and responsibilities and decide on potential products. This year the emphasis is going to be on ensuring they add value to their raw materials, as well as thinking about ethical and sustainability issues.
Our number focus has shifted towards fractions, decimals and percentages. Children have been linking knowledge of factors and multiples to help solve problems and links between the three types of numbers. Some children have been consolidating their understanding of simplifying and comparing fractions.
In strand maths we have continued developing our understanding of ways to efficiently calculate volumes of shapes and irregular objects. We will be using these new understandings to create our own 3d models with given volumes.
We have switched our text type to persuasive writing and have begun to consider different types of advertising. In the coming week we will also look at how we can persuade others of our skills and abilities in our discussion of job roles. We will take a closer look at the ways adverts try to change wants into perceived needs by using different techniques to influence our choices and purchases of different products and services.
5Y- Brandon -For growing in confidence and effectively communicating with his class.
5M- Katie for working cooperatively in lessons
5P- Krisheena for her enthusiasm and performance in the CNY celebrations
Please continue to read at home daily and use Mathematics and Reading Eggspress.
Children could also begin to look for examples of fractions and percentages used in the real world and also collect any photos or copies of advertisements they come across.
Important Reminder – School Snacks and Lunches
At Beacon Hill School have a number of children who are allergic to nuts. When preparing snacks and lunches for your children please avoid using nut products like Nutella and peanut butter. We thank you for your cooperation.
Next week children will be asked to bring in their initial $200 investment / startup costs for their business.
Please return any sold raffle tickets and remember more can always be requested.
