Is it really only the second week of the school year?  There seems to be so much going on.  Each of the Year 5 classes have settled into the class routine and the students have worked with dedication and consistency in the first few weeks.  This week the children should have brought home their reading journals and begun the home reading program.

In assembly this week Mrs McLaughlin shared the ‘Zones of Regulation’ with the school.  The Zones of Regulation are tools to help students stay focused in class and regulate their emotions in times of anger, stress and sadness.  Congratulations to Hannah and Willson of 5M who helped perform in the assembly.

UOI

Transdisciplinary Theme: Who We Are

Central Idea

We can understand and develop our emotional well being to lead a balanced life.

Lines of Inquiry

  • Managing and understanding our emotional wellbeing (form, function)
  • Developing and maintaining positive relationships (connection)
  • Ways to apply mindful behaviours (connection)

To begin our UOI we watched the movie “Inside Out’.  Is was very interesting to see how sadness is a natural feeling and that it is a perfectly normal part of life that can be helpful to maintain a well balanced life.  Building on from the themes of the movie we completed the pre-assessment that asked us to identify different emotions and how to live a balanced life.

In the coming week we will begin journalling emotions that we have throughout the unit and use this to see how we regulate our emotions to enjoy positive relationships with others.  The Zones of regulation have been introduced and we will link and identify different emotions and actions that relate to each of the zones. All the while we will be broadening our emotional vocabulary that will reflect in our narrative writing as well.

maths

Year 5 are continuing to explore the patterns found within the base ten system, in both whole number and decimals.

Skills include – partitioning numbers into their place value

                      – Renaming numbers as hundreds, thousands, tenths and hundredths

                      – Rounding numbers

                      – Expanding numbers in expanded notation

                      – Reading, writing, ordering and comparing numbers

So far the classes have been working with large numbers.  Inquiries have begun into the decimal system where the students will continue to develop their understanding of part numbers in the form of decimals.  The students will be working with both tenths and hundredths.

Vocabulary continues to be a great challenge in the maths class.  Below are some words which will be a great benefit for the students to understand:

decimal, tenths, hundredth, whole number, part-whole, rename, round

In Mrs McKinnon’s maths class the children were given this question to develop their understanding of rounding.  See how you go. Below are some pictures of the results from the class.

A number has been rounded off to 1200.  What might the number be?
