We have had another busy week in Year 5 with children continuing to work on their infographics. Students have been working collaboratively to combine their findings, related to their specific questions. From this they have created group information sheets, identified key facts and have used these facts to create their own graphics or icons to generate their infographic. With the help of Mr Lowe, the children will link their information sheets- along with video clips and photographs associated with their questions- to their Zap code. This will allow them to display all their background information in a virtual reality platform.
A number of children have been involved in preparations for next week’s Chinese New Year celebration. Whilst others have been taking part in trials for the CIS Road Race.
We have been delighted to see a number of children extending their understanding of how water is filtered by carrying out their own science experiments at home. We have enjoyed sharing these experiences in class and learning from one another.
Central Idea:
People’s actions can impact our water resources
Lines of Inquiry:
How water changes (change)
Responsibilities regarding water (responsibility)
Distribution, availability of, and access to, usable water (connection)
Next week, we will amalgamate all the things we have learned to complete our presentation. We look forward to exploring each others learning through the use of the Zap Codes. We will also begin to think about our Big Business unit of inquiry. During the week we will be considering what a business is and how it operates.
An inquiry into:
- Efficient mental strategies that can be used to solve addition and subtraction of decimal fractions
- Efficient written strategies that can be used to solve addition and subtraction decimal fractions
- Rules for patterns to predict future terms
Model addition and subtraction of decimal fractions up to hundredths
Solve addition problems (including real life and word) involving decimals in the form of money and measurement
Solve subtraction problems (including real life and word) involving decimals in the form of money and measurement
Use estimation and rounding to check the reasonableness of answers to calculations.
In number maths we have been applying our learning of split and compensation strategies when adding and subtracting decimal numbers, as well as sharing other strategies and written methods to solve problems. Students have particularly enjoyed solving problems which involved managing a budget.
In strand maths, we have continued to work on estimating and measuring capacity accurately. The children have also been converting measurements and ordering a range of measurements. They have had the opportunity to apply their knowledge in problem solving questions.
Year 5 have been working hard to create their own infographics this week following on from their work in information literacy with Ms Jeeves. Using the information they have researched and connected with their particular questions and areas of interest, they have been working on presenting these facts in their own unique way using graphics or icons.
Following the children’s work of identifying the key features of reports, the children have written their own reports where they have been challenged to include the features outlined in the criteria. Some children have been writing about areas of particular interest while others have written a report about Beacon Hill School. The children are continuing to work on self assessing their work against the criteria and making appropriate changes.
5Y- Austin Wong- for showing a great understanding about the volume of a cuboid
5M- Connor Yip – for using the criteria to support his report writing
5P- Christy Rusli- for taking action at home to explore water filtering
Please continue to use the concept cartoon relating to our current UOI. This is the last week left to explore, discuss and try out some of the ideas and questions it raises.
We suggest that children talk through the ideas with you and record any wonderings, questions or links to their school work. Children are then encouraged to explore the ideas further.
For example they may want to plan and carry out a similar experiment, conduct some research, create a media presentation / scratch game / cartoon to show their own thoughts and responses.
We would love to see the work done by students and are looking forward to the wide range of possibilities open to them.
Important Reminder – School Snacks and Lunches
At Beacon Hill School have a number of children who are allergic to nuts. When preparing snacks and lunches for your children please avoid using nut products like Nutella and peanut butter. We thank you for your cooperation.
Thank you to all the parents who have offered to supervise a group for the Year 5 trip to Sham Shui Po. We now have a date for the trip which will take place on Wednesday 22nd February from 12-2.30pm. We are still looking for a few more volunteers, so if you are interested in helping please email your child’s class teacher. We are still looking for any business volunteers to come and speak to the children about the factors/ skills required to run a successful business- if you are interested please let us know!
