It has been another big week in Year 5 with all classes working diligently on preparation for the sharing day. We are excited about sharing our learning with you on Friday 18th November. Starting at 9 and finishing at 11.

All classes will meet in the hall at 9am for a brief introduction.

UOI Migration can have an impact on people and society

Lines of Inquiry:

The reasons why people migrate (causation)
Migration throughout history (causation)
The challenges, risks and opportunities of migration (perspective)

All the children will be working hard to complete their various learning tasks in time for the sharing day. Poems are being composed and displayed. Clay is being modelled and finishings applied. Drama frames and lines will be practised and recorded.

Children will be having a busy week pulling together their learning over the past few weeks to produce independent work emphasising their own interest and curiosity about migration.

Multiplication and Division

Central Idea: Strategies for whole number computation can apply to fractional and decimal computation

An inquiry into:

Efficient Mental strategies that can be used to solve multiplication and division
Efficient Written strategies that can be used to solve multiplication and division
Equivalent number sentences involving multiplication and division to find unknown quantities.
Factors and multiples of whole numbers

We are coming to the end of our multiplication and division unit in Mathematics. It has seen the children challenged to complete open ended questions that require the use of multiplication and division skills to solve higher order problems. Some children have been exposed to various strategies to work out multiplication. Have a look at the videos below to see if any of these are familiar to you.

We will be moving into addition and subtraction and Elapsed time in the coming weeks.

We will be continuing to improve and finalise our poems and diary entries.

The children are being encouraged to keep their audiences in mind and remember that their work is going to be on public display.

Presentation and handwriting is an important feature when publishing a final draft.

Home reading should continue as normal.

Children can also access Mathletics and Reading Eggpress.

Children may be assigned additional tasks by their class teachers as they progress through the week and need to finish or further research ideas for their personal inquiries.

Important Reminder – School Snacks and Lunches

At Beacon Hill School have a number of children who are allergic to nuts. When preparing snacks and lunches for your children please avoid using nut products like Nutella and peanut butter. We thank you for your cooperation.

Camp Snacks

Today your child will bring home the snack suggestion to bring along to camp. This year we are trying to keep waste down so please only send in what you have been asked to bring in. In previous years we have had so much left over that it rotted. We appreciate that you may want to send in more but please don’t.

Snacks are due in to school on Friday the 18th November.

Arts in the Park

Print Hong Kong Arts in the Park festival will be held this weekend ( November 12th – 13th) at Victoria Park in Causeway Bay. Children from BHS will be performing so pop along and join the fun.
