Big Business has begun! The children have been put into their business groups and ideas, knowledge and enthusiasm is flowing. We have been thinking about the skills required to carry out various job roles within a company. It has been interesting to inquire into examples in the real business world and learn from their success. The children then thought about their own skills set and how these could help them in their business groups. All of you have so many qualities, talents, skills and characteristics to contribute to your group, this will make you a great team player. All classes have been learning how to use spreadsheets with help from Mr Thompson. This is a very useful skill to have, particularly for keeping budget records up to date and checking your business accounts. Once the children found out their business group, they began straight away to research and gather product ideas. The focus is to create your own product that is unique and original. Thanks to help from Ms.Jeves the children have also been putting surveys together so that they can gather market research to help them make decisions about their business.
WELL DONE TO EVERYONE FOR PARTICIPATING IN SPORTS DAY THIS WEEK! WE WERE VERY LUCKY WITH THE WEATHER AND YOU ALL DID A GREAT JOB COMPETING IN YOUR HOUSE TEAMS AND RUNNING IN THE RACE 🙂
Central Idea:
There are many factors at work in a market place
Next week, the business groups will complete their business surveys around school and begin to analyse their results. It is important that the groups get a range of responses from students and staff. This will help them make decisions about their business and understand the highest demand for products. We will also be preparing for our browsing and purchasing trip to Sham Shui Po.
Year 5 will continue to explore the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages. Pricing and discounts are an important factor in the business world, it is important to learn how to decrease amounts by percentage and identify the increase or decrease in money within a business.
Business groups will be using the data gathered in their surveys to gain a better understanding of the demand at Beacon Hill. They will be putting the information gathered into charts and graphs. This will help them to read the results and give the groups a clearer understanding of representing data results.
We have started to discuss the features of persuasive writing, our target audience and the language used. Classes will be exploring different examples of adverts and identifying the language features, pros and cons and beginning to recognise the top three tips for advertising- eye- catching, persuasive and original. This will help the business groups to start thinking about their own business name, logo and slogan.
5P: Hugo: explaining and presenting maths thinking to the class
5M: Sophia: excellent teamwork in Big Business and applying her skills.
5Y- Kylie: for settling into life in 5Y at Beacon Hill brilliantly.
Please continue to read at home daily and use Mathematics and Reading Eggspress.
Create a display of different logos, symbols and slogans you see around you in shopping malls, office blocks, magazines, on TV and online. This can be in the format of a Google doc, drawing or slide. Please share this with or hand it in to your class teacher by Friday 24th February.
Important Reminder – School Snacks and Lunches
At Beacon Hill School have a number of children who are allergic to nuts. When preparing snacks and lunches for your children please avoid using nut products like Nutella and peanut butter. We thank you for your cooperation.
