Fitness Tracking!
As part of your child’s Y4 unit of inquiry into the challenges, benefits and responsibilities of new media. Mr Teahan and Mr Lowe are supporting this unit through PE and ICT lessonsThrough the use of fitness bands, we would like to track your child’s activity levels and show them that digital technology can also impact on health. As many of you will know, a fitness band is a device worn on your wrist and it counts the number of steps you take. We will reflect on the data gathered at school and inquire into different ways your child can become more active. It is important to emphasise that we will be using the idea of ‘Personal Bests’ to challenge students to become more active rather than comparing students. Your child will receive the fitness band on a Wednesday and keep the device until the following Monday, see dates below:
4F – Wednesday 7th June until Monday 12th June
4L – Wednesday 14th June until Monday 19th June
4W – Wednesday 21st June until Monday 26th June
Below is a guide on how to look after the fitness bands. They should be worn at all times, except when your child is swimming, showering or bathing. Please note the device should not be removed from the wristband under any circumstances. If you have any queries please contact Mr Andy Thompson at andy.thompson@bhs.edu.hk

Learning Centre Stocktake!

Next week will be the last week your child can borrow books from the learning centre. All library books must be returned the following week in order to carry out the end-of-year stocktake.

Ukuleles!

Please make sure that your child brings their ukulele to music class from now until the end of the school year. It makes it very difficult to practise without one! Up to a third of a class have forgotten their ukulele this past week, so you can imagine how disruptive to their learning that can be. Please see below for when your child should bring their ukulele.

4F – Music on Thursdays – ukuleles needed.
4L – Music on Tuesdays – ukuleles needed.
4W – Music on Mondays – ukuleles needed.

Swimming!

Swimming lessons will begin for Y4 on Wednesday 7th June and will continue every Wednesday until the end of term.

4W have the first swimming session and so need to come to school wearing their swimming clothes underneath their uniform. The bus to the pool departs at 8:50am sharp. Children must arrive at school on time – no later than 8:45! Please make sure that you pack your underwear to change into after swimming!

All Y4 students will need to have their swimming kit (swimming suit/ trunks, goggles, swimming cap and towel) and a $5 coin for the lockers. Those with long hair might also like to wear their hair up to make it easier to put on their swimming hats. Please note that watches and bracelets are not allowed in the swimming pool, so to reduce the chance of things being lost, we highly recommend these are kept at home.

There are some timetable changes brought about by the commencement of swimming lessons. These will begin on the week of the 5th June and will continue until the end of the term. See below for details.

All Y4 classes – no class teacher-led PE lessons (swimming will replace these)
4L – PE (with Mr Teahan) moves to Fridays. Please come to school wearing PE kit on Fridays from 9th June until the end of term.

* update *
4F – Music Lessons (with Mr Gibson) will move to Thursdays, commencing w/b 29th May.

Maths assessments
Stop-checks and Maths assessments were carried out this week for the children to revisit and revise areas taught earlier on in the school year.
Digital Passports
The children have continued their learning through their digital passports and addressing important issues that may arise from the use of digital media.

Areas covered include…
  • Communication (avoiding multi-tasking with a mobile phone)
  • Privacy (learning what information is appropriate or inappropriate to share online)
  • Cyberbullying (making choices about what to do if they or their friends are cyberbullied)
  • Search (choosing effective keywords for conducting online searches)
  • Creative Credit (giving proper credit when using media content found online)

If you have any concerns regarding digital media (apps, online games, movies, websites, etc) your child is accessing, then you may find the common sense media website very useful. It has reviewed many popular online games and given them suggested age ratings in order to help parents make informed choices.

How We Organise Ourselves

Central Idea: The way we communicate information through digital media can bring challenges, benefits and responsibilities

Lines of Inquiry
An inquiry into:

  •  How new digital media is used and organised (function)
  •  Benefits and challenges of new media (reflection)
  •  Our responsibility in virtual environments (responsibility)

Next week the children will be working on the digital goal:’make a game’ through the use of an action plan. They will practise self-management skills in the planning process, time management and on task behaviour.

Year 4 – Maths Home learning 2.6.17 – Mathletics

We would like to ask the children to complete assigned activities on Mathletics. This will further prepare them for the stop-checks and assessments that will be carried out next week.

Daily home reading

Please check to make sure your child is taking home home reader books at their level, or reading books on Reading Eggs at their comprehension age level. PLEASE be reminded that the colour sticker on the reading book your child brings home is far less significant than the development of fluency AND comprehension. There is also an expectation that your child will read a book and complete any quizzes on Reading Eggspress twice a week.

Spelling

The children will have 10 new words to learn each week (Friday) and will be tested on them by a classmate three times per week. The words they have consist of some vocabulary relevant to our current U.O.I., some words relating to the spelling rule that we are currently learning about and some words of their choice.
