SEN Awareness Month – April

Once again, the Jockey Club Sarah Roe School PTA is selling ‘Inclusion for Everyone’ wristbands in recognition of April being SEN (Special Education Needs) Awareness month. There are small and large sizes available – $20 each. They are available from Anna in Reception. All funds raised go towards supporting SEN within ESF as a whole.

Book Fest

Book Fest is Wednesday 4th May – Friday 6th May.  The traditional dress up day and parade will again be held on the Friday.  This year the judges will be looking for the most creative costume in each class. So put your thinking hats on and work with your child to come up with a creative costume.

How the World Works

Central Idea: Changes of the earth and its atmosphere can impact the natural world

Lines of Inquiry

  1. How the different components of the earth are interrelated
  2. Why the earth has changed and continuing to change
  3. How we know the earth has changed

We have been completing science experiments on atmosphere, lightning, thunder and density.

Fractions and Decimals

Central Idea – Fractions and decimals are ways of representing whole part relationships

Lines of Inquiry:

  • Constructing and representing equal parts of a whole
  • Identifying, ordering and describing fractions using mathematical language
  • Understanding the relationship between fractions and decimals

The children will be learning to:

Read, write, compare, and order fractions

  • Understand and use equivalent fractions
  • Sequence and order fractions.
  • Order fractions

Use the language of fractions, for example, numerator and

     denominator.

Count in quarters, halves and thirds, including mixed numbers

Model and compare improper fractions and mixed numbers

  • Rename simple mixed numbers as improper fractions and vice versa

Measurement – Temperature

The children will be learning to:

  • Estimate and measure temperature in Celsius.
  • Begin to develop temperature landmarks. (boiling point, freezing point)

These outcomes will be linked with a variety of science experiments in the Unit of Inquiry.

 Explanation

To explain the processes involved in natural and social phenomena, or to explain how something works.

  • The structure of an explanation text is often:

                    –           a general statement to introduce or identify the topic

                    –           a series of sequenced steps/paragraphs explaining how or why something occurs, steps continue until the final state is produced or the explanation is complete

                    –           a concluding statement

                    –           text may include labelled diagrams, flow charts etc

  • Group related information using conventions of paragraphing
  • Questioning – forming questions to guide information finding

We are working towards our final assessment in the next few weeks.

Homework books will go home on Friday 29th April and will be due back on Friday May 6th.

Year Book Cover Competition
The children are invited to design a cover for this years Year Book. The requirements are on the school’s website.  Entries are due in Wednesday 4th May.
