Tuesday 30th May – PUBLIC HOLIDAY Dragon Boat Festival

Thursday 1st June – PTA Quiz

Thursday 8th June – Y4 Swimming starts.

Tuesday 13th June – Year 3 Bake Sale. Please bring some money for a tasty treat and to support the school.

Swimming!

Swimming lessons will begin for Y4 on Wednesday 7th June and will continue every Wednesday until the end of term.

4W have the first swimming session and so need to come to school wearing their swimming clothes underneath their uniform. The bus to the pool departs at 8:50 sharp. Children must arrive at school on time – no later than 8:45! Please make sure that you pack your underwear to change into after swimming!
All Y4 students will need to have their swimming kit (swimming suit/trunks, googles, hat and towel). Those with long hair might also like to wear their hair up to make it easier to put on their swimming hats. Please note that watches and bracelets are not allowed in the swimming pool, so to reduce the chance of things being lost, we highly recommend these are kept at home.
There are some timetable changes brought about by the commencement of swimming lessons. These will begin week of the 5th June and will continue until the end of the term. See below for details.

All Y4 classes – no class teacher-led PE lessons (swimming will replace these)
4L – PE (with Mr Teahan) moves to Fridays. Please come to school wearing PE kit on Fridays from 9th June until the end of term.
* update *
4F – Music Lessons (with Mr Gibson) will move to Thursdays, commencing w/b 29th May.

Fruity Fridays – ¨The Fate of Food Waste¨ Y6 Exhibition Group will be doing Bokashi composting, and to do composting they need fruit peels. To get enough fruit peels, they are hosting a ¨Fruity Friday¨ event. To contribute to this event, please bring in a fruit; apples, mangoes, and grapes. The Y4 teachers will award house points for the different fruits that are brought in!

Ukuleles!

Please make sure that your child brings their ukulele to music class from now until the end of the school year. It makes is very difficult to practice without one! Up to a third of a class have forgotten their ukulele this past week, so you can imagine how disruptive to their learning that can be. Please see below for when your child should bring their ukulele.

4F – Music on Thursdays – ukuleles needed.

4L – Music on Tuesdays – ukuleles needed.

4W – Music on Mondays – ukuleles needed.

Our new UOI is now into its second week and the students have continued to thoroughly enjoy our enquiries into digital media.
Digital Passports all round!
We have been thinking about our responsibility to use digital media appropriately and to facilitate this we have been completing some lessons devised by Common Sense Media. The lessons allow us to discuss important issues that may arise from the use of digital media and are followed up by some fun games and quizzes online (in a password protected environment, of course!) for the children to reinforce their learning at an age-appropriate level. By completing the activities the children will be able to earn a Digital passport!
Areas covered include…
  • Communication (avoiding multi-tasking with a mobile phone)
  • Privacy (learning what information is appropriate or inappropriate to share online)
  • Cyberbullying (making choices about what to do if they or their friends are cyberbullied)
  • Search (choosing effective keywords for conducting online searches)
  • Creative Credit (giving proper credit when using media content found online)

If you have any concerns regarding digital media (apps, online games, movies, websites, etc) your child is accessing, then you may find the common sense media website very useful. It has reviewed many popular online games and given them suggested age ratings in order to help parents make informed choices.

All about yourself in 5 tabs…
Thank you for being the unwitting victims of your child’s home learning task this week!
The children have thoroughly enjoyed sharing their findings about your internet habits with one another and we have been very impressed wit the range of presentation tools and styles that they have adopted.

How We Organise Ourselves

Central Idea: The way we communicate information through digital media can bring challenges, benefits and responsibilities

Lines of Inquiry
An inquiry into:

  •  How new digital media is used and organised (function)
  •  Benefits and challenges of new media (reflection)
  •  Our responsibility in virtual environments (responsibility)

Next week we will compare our data about internet usages (adults and children) and begin to think about some of other digital media goals for this UOI (such as learning a new skill, making a game, teaching a new skill and making a friend in a safe online environment).

 Probability

Central Idea – Probability is based on chance and can be expressed in different ways

Lines of Inquiry – An inquiry into:

  • Data from probability and how it can be collected, organised, displayed and analysed in different ways.
  • Different graph forms that highlight different aspects of probability data more efficiently.

Next week the children will continue to explore the language of probability using terms such as likely’, ‘unlikely’, ‘certain’, ‘impossible’. They will also begin to identify familiar events that are dependent and independent of the occurrence of the other.

We will be rounding up our recent work on probability and data handling and undertaking some end-of-year Maths assessments.

Year 4 – UOI Home learning 26.5.17 – Body Changes

Following on from watching the Body Changes video today, please complete the graphic organiser to sort the information you learned into INTERESTING and IMPORTANT – this will reinforce what we have been learning about Determining Importance.

On the reverse of the sheet you need to think about how you have changes – things you have done and things that you would like to do in the future.

Remember to talk to an adult at home about the new knowledge you acquired from the video and do not be afraid to ask questions. After all, these changes happen to everyone!

Deadline: Friday 2nd June

Daily home reading

Please check to make sure your child is taking home home reader books at their level, or reading books on Reading Eggs at their comprehension age level. PLEASE be reminded that the colour sticker on the reading book your child brings home is far less significant than the development of fluency AND comprehension. There is also an expectation that your child will read a book and complete any quizzes on Reading Eggspress twice a week.

Spelling

The children will have 10 new words to learn each week (Friday) and will be tested on them by a classmate three times per week. The words they have consist of some vocabulary relevant to our current U.O.I., some words relating to the spelling rule that we are currently learning about and some words of their choice.
