This has been a short week in Year 2 but this hasn’t stopped us from inquiring and learning lots.
We have been learning about primary and secondary sources, creating lap books, solving maths codes and writing recounts about our long weekend.
Central idea: Geography influences how individuals interact with their environment.
Lines of inquiry:
- The significant features of places -form
- How the features of a place influence our activities -function
- The relationship of our location to other parts of the world – connection
This week we have been looking at our location in the world. The classes have been looking at maps of Hong Kong and the surrounding environment. We have been identifying key geographical features and looking at the different tourist attractions within and around Hong Kong.
Next week we shall be visiting Victoria Peak and sketching maps of the key features from different aspects. We will be identifying different ways that Hong Kong is used by locals and visitors.

We have really stretched our brains this week in Maths. We have decoded a secret 100 square and created a key to help others. We have identified the symbols for numbers and are able to explain that these can sometimes replace the numbers when creating calculations. This was an extremely challenging task and we found ourselves in our “Stretchy Space”.
Next week we shall be looking at jump counting to help us add 2 and 3 digit numbers. We shall also be trying to calculate the total when 3 numbers are added together.
We have continued with our writer’s workshop this week and have focused on different skills to help improve our writing. After returning from our long weekend, we have written a recount of our activities. We have ensured that we have been using our individual writing targets to make our writing more interesting and engaging for the reader. We have proof read to check for errors in spelling and punctuation. During Info Lit, we have been looking at determining the importance of the information we research. Miss Jeves has been teaching us how to identify primary and secondary sources. We looked at videos of Hong Kong, maps and books and we discussed which were important and which were interesting.
We shall continue to work on our writers workshop with a particular focus on generating an information leaflet/holiday brochure for Hong Kong as a class. In groups we shall be researching the information we feel is important and deciding upon 5 questions we would like to find out when creating our individual brochures.
As Monday was a holiday, there was no Golden Book.
This shall resume on Monday 5th June
Spelling– Friday 2nd June was the last Spelling Test of the year. The children will not receive new words. Parents are welcome to continue practising the words previously given to the pupils.
