All children need to be in their P.E. kit for our trip on Tuesday 14th March. Please remember that all children need a picnic style lunch and water filled water bottle in a small bag. They must wear a school hat and a light waterproof jacket. Children do not need to bring their home school folders on this day.
Please remember to return all PTA Ticket stubs for the IFF.
If you have not yet returned your child’s portfolio then please return it ASAP.
The children have used their knowledge of materials and adjectives to describe the outfits they wore to school on our dress down day. We have had fun with Mr Thomson making bread and using our measuring skills to make sure we added the right amount of ingredients to the mixture. We have completed our narratives based on the Three Little Pigs. In class we have been measuring the volume and mass of everyday objects. We have used CAD to design a 3 Dimensional design and used the 3D printer to create these.
Central idea: People use and change materials to suit their needs
lines of inquiry:
- The properties of materials and how they are used
- How materials can change
- The manipulation of materials for new purposes
The children have made bread to show how materials can be manipulated for new purposes. We have finished our summative assessments into materials and next week we shall begin our new unit on transport systems. This will begin with our provocation trip to different parks in Hong Kong using different modes of transport and later our trip to Kowloon Tong MTR where we will investigate the different modes of transport and the purpose of these.
Length
- Estimate and order the length of real objects using centimetres as a reference.
- Estimate, measure and compare lengths of objects using centimetres with some accuracy.
- Recognise objects that are longer/shorter than a metre.
- Use body parts (e.g. hand spans, foot lengths, strides) and familiar objects (e.g. leaves, pop-sticks) repeatedly to match the length of things and say how many fit.
The children have begun to look at objects of different weights and ordering them from lightest to heaviest using hefting. We have been estimating the mass of everyday objects and comparing these to cubes. We have been using the vocabulary of heavier, same and lighter to describe the weight of these objects. In class we have discussed breadth and depth of items and how this can effect the volume and capacity.
Next week we shall be looking at length. We shall begin with using non standard units of measure to compare the size of things. We shall then use the language of larger, smaller and the same to identify the size and finally move on to using cm to measure with accuracy.
Non chronological reportWe have continued working on descriptive writing to create visual images in stories, and focusing on character descriptions to make our stories more interesting. The children have been self and peer assessing their work and trying to find areas for growth.
We shall begin to look at non chronological reports. We will begin to look at headings, sub headings, labels, diagrams and contents. This shall then lead us onto writing our own reports.
Seven days of ABCs and 123s
We are all looking forward to our Seven Days of ABCs and 123s which begins on Monday 13th March. This year we will be having special activities to celebrate the special link between Maths and books. Has your child joined our pattern photo competition? If not details are below.
Dress Up Day – Monday 20th March
Our traditional dress up day will take place on the 20th March. All the children and staff in school will dress up in costume. We encourage the children to be creative and imaginative with their costume. So please try and avoid football kits or the children coming as themselves!
To celebrate the collaboration between books and Maths, this year the children can choose to dress as a book character or something maths related.
Here are some pictures to insprire your child’s creations.
Book related costumes
Seeing and understanding pattern is very important in Maths for many reasons, for example to improve our knowledge of shape and space, to help estimation and solve problems in algebra. Pattern is also very important in the English language, it can be seen in spelling, sentence structure and of course poetry. Many stories follow a pattern too and understanding this can help develop children’s comprehension. This year our photo competiton celebrates pattern.
Your child needs to take a photo on the theme of pattern and send it to Ms Jeves at the following address: jevese2@beaconhill.edu.hk Please can you make sure the subject header for the photo contains your child’s name and class. Closing date: 21st March.
