Year 2 Update Wk 23
The children have continued to inquire into different materials. They have looked at what floats, sinks, melts, dissolves, rusts and what is waterproof. The children have also continued with their narratives based on ‘The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig’. The children have spent time preparing for their student-led conferences, thinking about what they are pleased about with their learning and areas for improvement. They have been looking forward to sharing their learning with you.
Central idea: People use and change materials to suit their needs
lines of inquiry:
- The properties of materials and how they are used
- How materials can change
- The manipulation of materials for new purposes
The children will be making bread to show how materials can be manipulated for new purposes. The children will finish their inquiries into materials and reflect on what they have learned.
Measure and compare mass of real objects
- Measure and compare mass of real objects.
- Choose objects of the same size to use for measuring and count the units to balance an object; e.g. same-sized pebbles to say how heavy something is in pebbles.
- Heft or use a balance beam to say which is heavier of two visually similar-sized objects; e.g. tins filled with different materials.
The children will be looking at objects of different weights and ordering them from lightest to heaviest using hefting. This is where the children place the objects in each of the palms of their hands and determine which they feel is lighter or heavier. The children will also be looking at whether objects with different size, shape and texture can have the same mass.
As many parents know, many cases of chickenpox have been reported, especially in 2G with around eleven cases and several other absences. There will likely be more cases in the future, so please observe your children and have any suspected cases confirmed by a doctor. Thank you!
