The last full week before the holidays is always a busy one. Children have been decorating their classrooms, making and delivering Christmas cards, and showing teachers what they know for the mid-year reports.
While working with Ms Cassie in the art room children have designed and created a candle holder that represents part of a tradition or celebration of their choice. The clay projects get fired this weekend and will be ready for painting when returning from the holiday!
Celebrations and traditions can be expressions of shared beliefs and values
Lines of Inquiry
- Features of traditions and celebrations (form)
- Shared beliefs across celebrations (form, connection)
- Why people celebrate (causation)
After learning as a class about one holiday using some research and investigation, children are now forming groups to learn more about a holiday or tradition they are interested in. When school convenes after the break classes will brainstorm what they already know about these topics. What happens? Why? Are there special foods and clothing? Who celebrates this holiday? After their collective knowledge has been gathered, children will work to find books and videos on their topic, interview people, ask questions, and maker observations to learn more.
Maths Review
This week in maths we have been learning how to read analogue clocks to the hour and half hour. We have been learning to record the time using both digital and analogue clocks.
Next week we shall be re-visiting fractions and place value to ensure that we are able to use these in real life contexts. We will also be doing some Christmas maths problem solving. 2K will be measuring with Miss Chung whilst learning how to bake.
This week children wrote letters to someone without help so teachers could assess their independent writing level, and we have looked at poetry to practice looking for clues in writing to make learn what the author might want to say even though he or she doesn’t say it directly.
The next reading skill children will work on in the new year will be visualisation – creating a picture in your head to help you better understand the meaning of the text.
