This week in Year 2 both 2M and 2G visited the Hong Kong Eco Park to take a closer look at what happens to waste in Hong Kong. There was an interesting display of the types of plastic and rubbish that wash ashore in Hong Kong beaches, and there was a large model landfill that students could walk through to immerse themselves in Hong Kong’s waste problem.
Our personal choices can impact the environment
Lines of Inquiry
- Decomposing (function)
- How our actions affect the environment (causation)
- Personal choices that can help sustain the environment (reflection)
This week children have been finishing up their letters about their pledges for the environment. You can help by asking your child about their pledge and how you can help them remember to act on it and achieve it.
As a connection to information literacy, classes reviewed the ideas they have gathered about the environment and wrote poetry using a template about living things and making a positive change.
Next week classes will start a new unit under How We Express Ourselves.
Find equal parts of shapes and collections
- Equally share a collection of objects into 2 or more equal groups for example by sharing 12 balls between 3 bags by using number facts 4+4+4=12.
- Discuss possible strategies if the whole parts cannot be shared equally e.g.: 3 people, 5 cakes – how much cake each?
- Find equal parts of shapes for example folding paper squares – how many ways can you divide it equally?
Fractions
This week children looked at splitting numbers equally into fractions, with a focus on halves and quarters. Groups split numbers of objects equally among them to compare how shapes and numbers can both be divided into fractions. We have continued to use the language of fractions, and will connect to fractions of time next week when we review measuring time to the full and half hour.
Phonics– ‘o, o_e, ow, oa’
In reading we will be focussing on making inferences – trying to figure out what is happening in the writing or text without being said directly. A fun way to practice this is to look at the imagery of poetry, and we will be looking at a number of poems to discuss what we can infer from the descriptions.
2M and 2G reflected on their trips to the Eco Park and what they have learned about waste overall during the unit.
Also, look forward to seeing the letters students have written about their pledges!
