Here are some bit of housekeeping that we would like to take care of and we need your help:

If you have not been receiving emails from your class teacher, please make sure that your correct email address is updated on the Gateway and check your spam folders.

Ms Jeves would like your child’s library bag to be recognizable to them. You can do this with a bit of ribbon or a small key chain on the zipper.

Be sure to sign the reading journal every day! Remember, if you need to keep the same book for another day or so it is okay. Reading at home should be fun, quick, and easy. Not a lot of work!

Who We Are

Central Idea: People have characteristics, abilities and interests that form who they are.

The central idea for this unit is a complex one, and classes have been reinforcing the idea that we all have similarities and differences and these are okay. In fact, the differences are what make life so great! Life would be boring if we all ate the same foods and sang the same songs. But it’s the similarities that bring us all together as people who live and care for the Earth. We will be looking at this idea a little more next week. Have a chat with your child and see if you can work together to think of some things that all people have or need.

As mentioned in the Meet The Teacher classroom presentations, the focus for Year 1 Maths is concept based. This means that we want students to know what numbers mean and how they work before focusing on equations and written problems. Building familiarity with numbers through physically counting items and mathematically based toys has been shown to strengthen a child’s ability to solve math problems more creatively in the future. So we do a lot of this in Year 1! For example, measurement is our current non-number based unit (we always have a concurrent number unit at the same time) so students next week will be comparing sizes of objects and measuring classroom items and their bodies with blocks.IMG_3366

Remember, the reading level is not what is important at this time. Understanding what they read is the focus! If your child has more experience with reading you can take a look at the Camera Word sheet that went home and see if they can read these words quickly and remember how they are spelled.
Happy reading!

PTA Bowling Night is here! If you see your child’s teacher please try to introduce yourself and mention your child’s name. Sixty new faces are hard to keep track of! Hope to see you there, and have a great weekend!
