Year 1 Update – Wk 9
Welcome back! The children all came back to school happily after the half term holiday. Many children were excited to share their holiday stories. Lots of children spoke about gatherings with class and school friends.
House teams-This week each child was given a coloured wristband corresponding to their house. Please help your child to remember to wear their band everyday. Replacements cost $20 from the school office. The four houses are Kuài lè (happiness/yellow) 快乐, Duō yuán (diversity/green) 多元, Bāo róng (inclusivity/blue) 包容, Xìn xīn (confidence/red) 信心. The children are very eager to earn points for their teams, and they can do so under four categories: Behaviour, Effort, Attitude and Care.
Provocation – This week we began our second unit of inquiry under the theme of How We Organise Ourselves. Below are some photographs of our provocation. The children got to experience a classroom where there were no adults for the first 15 minutes of the day. Mr Harrison, Miss Chung and Mr Thompson were outside classrooms to supervise. After this experience we had discussions about class responsibilities and roles of individuals.
Central Idea: Within a community that are different roles and responsibilities
Next week we will talk more about the roles that people play in our school community. Children will discuss what they know about the adults who work in school as well as develop questions to find out more about their roles. We will also spend time practising the skill of asking questions to find out what we do not know.
Next week we will be beginning our year long unit. Each week we will dedicate a small amount of time to this unit.
How the World Works
Central Idea: The Earth’s changes affect the activity of living things
Next week Mr Thompson will be working in each year one class as we start our unit. Our focus will be weather and the recording of temperature and rainfall.
Next week in writing we will continue with the writing purpose of ‘writing to socialise’. The Purpose of writing to socialise is to help writers enhance and maintain relationships. Examples of writing to socialise includes announcements, apology letters, SMS messages, thank you notes, postcards, invitations, greeting cards, notes and messages. This week we started by reading stories to the children that contain letters. The children then had a go at writing a letter to a friend. Next week we will deconstruct a letter looking at the language tools used. Writers workshop will also continue with the children having some choice about what they would like to write about.
This week we started on unit two of our synthetic phonic programme. Your child has bought home a green sheet with information and ideas to support the learning that we will do at school.
Phonemes: r l d b f h i u
Camera Words: day, of, a, he, today, for
At school, as part of our language rotations all the children read to an adult at least once a week, usually twice.
Congratulations to our Golden Book certificate winners from Monday 3rd October 2016.
