Year 1 Update – Wk 5
Mrs Sanghvi This week Mrs Sanghvi came and read to the Year One children. She read a story called “Who said Kiwis Can’t fly” This is a story about persevering and not giving up. Please ask your child what they enjoyed about the story.
Mid-Autumn Festival Today your child visited the PTA Mid-Autumn market stall to buy fruit and lanterns. This was such as enjoyable experience for all children. It was wonderful to see the children having a go at communicating in Mandarin. Many thanks to the PTA and parents who helped with this event.
Measurement The children were busy this week learning a poem about measuring height. They also used non standard units such as cubes, links and teddies to measure and compare objects. In maths we also continued counting forwards and backward in ones from a given number.
P.M.P and U.O.I Rotations Once again we would like to thank all the parents who have helped with both UOI Rotations and PMP this week. Without your support, we would be unable to run these highly important programs for the children.
Funzone
We have now received all the permission slips and money in for our trip to Funzone on Monday 19th September. We look forward to meeting you all on Monday. Please read all instructions carefully in the handout that you will receive on Monday morning.
Sunhats
It is a school requirement that all children wear a B.H.S sunhat in the playground. If a child does not have a hat they need to play in the under cover area. Please make sure that all sunhats are clearly named with your child’s name and class. Many children seem to have lost their hats at the moment. We have shown all the year one children where the lost property box is and will continue to remind children where to look if they cannot find their sunhat
Going home arrangements
We have found that parents have been fantastic and letting teachers and the bus company know of any changes to how children are going home at the end of the school day. We have noticed though that sometimes some children are not aware when the arrangements for a day have changed. Please do tell your child if you plan to pick them up when they normally go on the bus or if they are usually picked up by you but are going to be picked up by someone else.
Central Idea: People have abilities and interests who form who they are.
Next week we will talk about what makes a good friend and each class will make a class book to share with others. Students will also be completing tasks with friends such as puzzles, construction and reading a book.
We will also be discussing what we thinks makes a good learner and reflecting upon how we learn best.
Next week Ms Jeves will finish off her time with the year one children for this term. She will work with the students helping them to ask questions about something that they do not know.
Measures
Next week we will continue our maths focus of measurement. Students will measure, compare and sort lengths using non- standard units such as cubes, teddies and learning links.
We will be using the language of measurement which includes words like long, short, tall, short and higher.
Concepts about print Our focus for next week when we read with the students will be concepts of print. This includes reminders of:
- Reading from left to right.
- Reading from top to bottom.
- The fact that letters and words convey a message.
- Print is what we read.
- The “return sweep”, to move from one line to the next.
- Illustrations in a book correspond to the print.
- Every book as a front, back, and an author.
At home when you are reading with your children please have discussions about not only the words on the page but also the parts of the book.
Reading assessments Over the next couple of weeks we will assessing the children to make sure that they are bringing home a book from the correct colour. Please be patient as these assessments can take approximately ten to fifteen minutes for each child. Please remember that the book that your child takes home is a ‘practise’ book and they may already be able to read it.
