Year 1 Update – Wk 31
This week in Year 1 the children have been expressing themselves through the arts whilst exploring how stories can be told in different ways. They have been busy learning a dance with Mrs Martin our visiting dance teacher, exploring stories through music with Mr Gibson and in PMP they have been retelling the story of Rosie’s Walk. In their own classes the children have been looking at a variety of stories and have been exploring how they can retell them through art, drama and puppet play. Our new Theatre role play area in the Shared Area has been particularly popular with the children as they have enjoyed dressing up, making up their own stories, dancing and singing.
How We Express Ourselves
Central Idea: People Can Share Stories In Different Ways To Communicate
This is a continuation of the year long unit that we touch upon throughout all three school terms. Next week the children will continue to explore different ways to tell stories and will look into how these methods of storytelling make them feel. In the next few weeks they will have the opportunity to explore storytelling with Mr Lowe by using storytelling apps. They will also be learning about how they can tell stories through drama and yoga.
This is a fantastic unit for you to support at home by sharing stories in different ways. Why not have a go at telling your child’s favourite stories using puppets and props or maybe work together to make up your own stories.
Central Idea: Shapes are classified and named according to their properties
This week we have been finishing our work on 3D shapes. The children have been exploring the properties of 3D shapes in practical contexts and have been introduced to the vocabulary of corners, edges and faces when describing shapes such as cones, cubes, cuboids, spheres, pyramids, cylinders and prisms.
Each week we continue to work on number stories where the children have to use their knowledge of addition and subtraction to solve simple number problems. We have noticed that many of the children are good at performing basic calculations using number sentences such as, 2+2=4 however, when we put these numbers into a story context they are unable to apply their knowledge confidently. You can help us at home by asking the children to solve problems such as the examples below.
- Mr Greene had 8 chocolate cupcakes. He shared 4 of his cakes with Mrs Farago. How many cupcakes did Mr Greene have left?
- When it left BHS the number 23 bus had 6 children on it. 4 more got onto the bus at Kowloon Tong. How many children are now on the bus?
Next week we will be starting a new Maths topic based on fractions and will start the unit by tuning the children into the concept of halves and quarters through shapes, numbers, stories and through some fun art activities.
Phonics
Next week we will continue with our Unit 6 phonemes. Please help us at home by playing the games on the Unit 6 Phonic Bookmark.

Over the past few weeks we have noticed that some of the children are bringing unhealthy snacks and lunches to schools. Whilst we appreciate that the children like treats every now and then, please help them to be balanced by encouraging them to make healthy choices for their snacks and lunches. Fruit is always a great option!
We would like to thank Mr Kan who came into school today to be our Mystery Storyteller. The children loved listening and joining in with the story “Let’s go for a Drive” by Mo Willems.
