Year 1 Update – Wk 3
This week the Year 1 students have all enjoyed having lunch at school and understanding this new routine. They have also started to take home Home Readers and learn what to do when, such as what to write and where the books go. The children have been learning about sorting different objects, such as family member figures, houses with different door and roof colours and of different sizes and categorised different modes of transport depending on where they travel, the sky, ground or water. The children have started their heart maps, these will help them think of ideas of what they might want to write about in future. The teachers have been continually assessing the children in different areas of English and Maths.
The children have all enjoyed making fruity faces with Miss Chung and listening to stories with Mr Harrison and Mr Thompson this week. They also learned how to use the app ‘story maker’ to create stories in their Information Technology lesson, which I am sure they would enjoy sharing with you at home.
Thank you to all those parents who came to the ‘Meet The Teacher’ evening on Tuesday. It was lovely to meet you all. The PowerPoint will be available for you to look at on the school website.
PMP Helpers
Thank you so much to all the parents who have volunteered to help us with PMP this term, we would not be able to run this programme without your valuable support. Please check your child’s home-school diary for a detailed plan of the activity you will be running for 6 children at a time next week.
Mathletics
We expect mathletics to be a regular part of your child’s home learning. This means that an adult should be supporting the learning. You will need to read the instructions and questions and also might need to use counters (cars, beads, grapes etc) to assist the mathematics concepts. Please choose the activities carefully, some activities may not be suitable for your child yet and you may need to come back to it later in the year. Little and often is best with home learning and it is best to come back to the activities on a regular basis than work through a big chunk each time. For example, 10 minutes of solid learning once a day for 6 days is better than one hour every 6 days as the Year Ones struggle to focus for long periods of time.
Home Reader Book Routine
Well done on getting the book routines at home started so successfully. Please remember that your child will not be able to take a new home reader home unless we have a signature in the diary to acknowledge that the book has been read and that there is a book bag to take the books home in. The book bag needs to be brought to school everyday to make sure that all the books are all taken home in the best condition, not just on Learning Centre days now.
Library Borrowing
Once a week the children have the opportunity to borrow a new book. They will only be allowed to take a new book as long as they have their book bag to take it home and that they have brought back the book from the previous week. Please do not expect the children to read this book to you, but find a time in the week to enjoy it together, preferably more than once. Also, try and talk about the book as you read it and when it is finished to check for their understanding.
Hats
Often the children leave their hats lying around. We are still finding hats which do not have names in them, in this case we cannot know if we give the hat back to the appropriate owner. Please make sure you check everything is named this weekend. The best idea is to write the name very big in permanent marker inside the cap.
Central Idea: People have abilities and interests who form who they are.
This week the children have been excited to share their “All About Me” posters with their buddies. In our Information Literacy lessons with Ms Jeves, the children will be continuing to think about what makes a good listener and a good speaker and how to ask a good question with the question word at the beginning of the sentence. (Who, where, why, what, when, how)
We will be also be focussing a lot on what we are all good at as well as the different ways we learn (some ideas are, talking to my teacher, practice, copying, questioning, working with others, trial and error, taking risks, not giving up and learning from mistakes). Much of this will be in the form of discussion as well as recording using writing and different art forms. To prepare your child for these discussions at school it is a good idea to practise at home, tell them what you think you are good at and think of ideas together of what they are good at. On another day you might want to talk about how people learn.
Number
In our Maths lessons next week we will be focussing on counting numbers in sequences forwards and backwards moving from any starting point using cardinal numbers 1,2,3 and ordinal first, second, third.
Pattern and Function
We will also continue to sort and classify familiar objects and explain the basis for these classifications.
The children have now all been introduced to our first 8 phonics. We hope that you find the yellow unit 1 cards useful to help support the children when learning how to blend and segment words at home. As with the mathletics, little and often is best. Next week we will continue to learn to use these sounds and will be using the camera word “I” in short written sentences.
Phonemes: s m p t g a o c
Camera Words: I are the she was to
Congratulations to all our Golden Book winners for this week.
