Year 1 Update – Wk 24
This week the children enjoyed a quiet week. We have worked hard finding out about regular things that we take for granted and what they were before. Many of the children have found out about foods such as oils and coffee and other items such as rubber gloves and aloe vera gel. They have all planted seeds with Miss Chung too.
We have enjoyed finding out more about each other when tallying and graphing information about the class mates favourite things.
News from the English team
Seven days of ABCs and 123s
We are all looking forward to our Seven Days of ABCs and 123s which begins on Monday 13th March. This year we will be having special activities to celebrate the special link between Maths and books. Has your child joined our pattern photo competition? If not details are below.
Dress Up Day – Monday 20th March
Our traditional dress up day will take place on the 20th March. All the children and staff in school will dress up in costume. We encourage the children to be creative and imaginative with their costume. So please try and avoid football kits or the children coming as themselves!
To celebrate the collaboration between books and Maths, this year the children can choose to dress as a book character or something maths related.
Here are some pictures to inspire your child’s creations.

Photo competition- Closing date 21st March
Seeing and understanding pattern is very important in Maths for many reasons, for example to improve our knowledge of shape and space, to help estimation and solve problems in algebra. Pattern is also very important in the English language, it can be seen in spelling, sentence structure and of course poetry. Many stories follow a pattern too and understanding this can help develop children’s comprehension. This year our photo competition celebrates pattern.
Your child needs to take a photo on the theme of pattern and send it to Ms Jeves at the following address: jevese2@beaconhill.edu.hk Please can you make sure the subject header for the photo contains your child’s name and class. Closing date: 21st March.
Central Idea: Plants and animals depend of each other for survival in their environments
The children have really enjoyed touching, smelling and looking at many different everyday items and learning about where they come from and have been made out of. Please help the children to investigate different items in your homes that originated from plants or animals. Please encourage your child to bring some in to share. The children have been looking into the ingredients that go into making their own lunches, learning about where foods such as breads, pasta and rices, meats and vegetables all come from. This week the children have also been planting Eggplant, Cucumber and Pak Choi with Miss Chung and will be looking after their plants at school for a few weeks. With Ms Jeves the children have been looking at the language of connection and how to use ‘because’, in sentences starting, “The … is connected to the … because… ” and using arrows in diagrams to show this. They also worked together to justify what makes a living thing living, e.g: growth, reproduction, movement etc.
We will be using our online reading subscriptions to focus on plant and animal vocabulary and continue to find out where the foods have come from. We will see what the food was before and the different regions the foods come from. Next week the children will be concluding their Information Literacy lessons with Ms Jeves. They will be continuing to look at connections between particular plants and animals to make honey as well as continuing to understand how to use the word ‘because’ and making connections.
Objects and numbers can be divided into equal parts and groups.

We will start to focus on a new unit about fractions. The children will be looking into what the term half means and can look like, especially focussing on the importance of equal amounts. Vocabulary that the children should be able to use include equal parts, halves, sharing, the same and equal amount. The children will be completing different open ended tasks.
This coming week we will be celebrating 7 days of ABCs and 123s. The children will be working together to decorate their class door related to a maths picture book.

Experience- Cooking
Many of the children have said that they do not get many opportunities to try cooking at home. During this unit would be the perfect time to have a go at a few recipes. Cooking at home would be a fantastic opportunity for the children to use a variety of different ingredients that come from animals and plants. Please discuss how all the different ingredients have come about, for example, if you use flour discuss how the wheat grew and what people had to do to change (grind) it. Pancakes are a great example, an easy recipe with three interesting ingredients which only need a cup, bowl, spoon and pan. If it is useful, please refer to this video clip of chef Jamie Oliver making an easy pancake recipe with two of his daughters. Of course you could make what ever you wish, but when you have finished, please make sure you send us a photo of your efforts!
