Year 1 Update – Wk 16
This week in Year One the children have enjoyed worked hard to finish many projects and show their best work. The children have made wonderful posters about different roles in the community, books about their specialist areas and looked at the weather over a whole day.
The children have also enjoyed spending time with their buddies, each class doing different activities.
Central Idea: Exploring artefacts helps our understanding of people’s histories.
Please have the artefacts ready for your child to share at school. The children will be completing their pre-assessment. We will share the artefacts and discuss what artefact means.
How the World Works (our year long unit of inquiry)
Central Idea: The Earth’s changes affect the activity of living things
When we return from the holidays the children will starting a focus on hot and cold. This will include looking in weather, seasons and why we wear different types of fabrics and clothing at different times of the year.
To finish the term the children will complete the book they have been writing in the Writer’s Workshop lessons. The children have been writing a small non-fiction book about something they are specialists in. After the holidays we will be starting a new book about artefacts.
Phonics
Next week we will continue to focus on all the one letter sounds, including the new sounds:
V, W, Y, Z, J, N, K, E.
The children should be able to hear these sounds in words that are consonant, vowel, consonant, such as log, cut, hat and be able to tell you the word when you give them 3 sounds. We are aiming for the children to be able to write them too.
Camera Words: all, is, me, no, they, said
Please remember we are aiming for the children to be able read and spell the camera words.

To do this week
Activities
Cutting. At school we expect the children to be able to cut out on the line. This is not only is an important skill, but cutting also strengths fingers and hands ready for writing and other fine motor activities. To be able to cut on the lines many of our students need to practise daily.
Christmas is the perfect time to practise this skill. Decorations such as paper chains and snowflakes are great ideas to start with. Pinterest has lots of Christmas cutting ideas.
Mall Christmas Happenings
Please click on the link below for a guide to holiday mall happenings across 11 different malls over Hong Kong, these include events such as Santa parades, holiday trains, snow globes, and carols. Also, if you will be in the IFC or Tai Koo Plaza this weekend please go and hear our wonderful Chamber Choir, please check the newsletter for times.
Where We Are In Place And Time Unit
On Tuesday the 3rd we will be starting a new unit. We would very much appreciate the children bringing in two items. Very importantly please make sure they are able to talk about each piece, although this does not mean learning to say something by heart.
- Please send in in the first week… An artefact that depicts what life might have been like in Hong Kong in the past.
- Needed later on in the term… Photos/objects from their childhood e.g.: baby toys, clothes, photos of a memorable event in their family etc.
Thank you very much! We look forward to finding out all about what they bring at the beginning of the next term.
