Year 1 Update – Wk 11
This week in Year One we have had a very busy week. The children have started their sessions at the pitch on Wednesday afternoons. This means that we are running all six unit of inquiry rotations on Thursdays instead of Wednesday afternoons and Thursdays.
1F and 1L also fitted their play workshops into the timetable this week. We hope you will find that this was time well spent and that you and they got a lot of vital information to take forward from this session. The powerpoint presentation will be made available on the website after 1W’s workshop next Tuesday.
Central Idea: Within a community that are different roles and responsibilities
This week the children will send the invitations they they sent in the previous week and will meet various members of staff to interview.
Following on from the pledges from you all, we will be looking at the children’s responsibility at school! We will be discussing this and recording their responsibility during a fire drill on a flow chart. The children will be continuing an ongoing project, building a community. In this session we expect children to work together to build communities from blocks or lego and move away from each starting and completing their own building and putting the pieces together at the end. This needs a lot of communication, cooperation, creativity and make connections to the feelings, ideas and actions of others.
How the World Works
Central Idea: The Earth’s changes affect the activity of living things
Next week the children in Year 1 will be starting to inquire into day and night by listening to stories, reading non-fiction books and other hands on activities. The children will be learning about day and night and the different activities that might happen in the different stages of the day, including learning about nocturnal and diurnal animals.
In English this week we will be continuing our unit based on writing to socialise. The children will continue to have a go at their own letter writing and have loved using the Post Office in our Shared Area. We will send our letters and respond to any replies as well as welcome different members of staff who have been invited by written invitation to be interviewed by our students.
Next week we will also continue with this focus by looking at the postcard layout, ready to send our letters next week.
We will start to send home non-fiction books from the Learning Centre. Please talk to your child about what they are interested in and which books may be interesting to them.

The weather is perfect for a trip to the beach this month and there are many to choose from. This is the perfect scene to promote unstructured play (where the children lead the play) and for the children to get involved in messy play, scientific exploration and for being creative. Meeting other children of the same age will be of great benefit in working towards co-operative play, working together towards a common goal, for example a sandcastle built together. If your child struggles to play cooperatively with others please make sure they try it in small steps, for short periods of time and with adults nearby to help resolve any conflict.
There are so many things to do at the beach, but the best thing to do is to let the children lead the activities, of course they might need some ideas. Remember to take towels or beach mats, sunblock, sunhats, plenty of water maybe some insect repellent and picnic or, if appropriate, barbecue food.
