Books with no words
Some of our students have commented that their parents are not keen on the magenta level books that have no words. Books which only have pictures are vital to the children’s reading skills at this stage in their reading development. These books are designed to develop children’s retelling and visualisation skills. The children need to give as many details as they can on each page, to tell the story as if they are reading the words. When the book is finished ask the children to tell the story without looking at the pictures.
The magenta books boxes have a mixture of these books and books with short sentences mostly full of words which have a high frequency in the English language, many of them are camera words. The children pull the books out of the box randomly and we hope that they will have a balance of both kinds of books to work towards all the different targets they are working towards at this stage.
Reading Workshops
These workshops are an opportunity to learn more about how we explicitly teach comprehension skills at school.
Wednesday 9th November – 2pm for helpers only, 6.30pm parents.
An email was sent out to all parents with details and the link to the sign up form: https://goo.gl/forms/tCOExvSBubJkDCSy2
Play Workshop
Thank you so much to all the parents who have joined us from the 1F and 1L classes and thank you for your valuable reflections. If you have not sent in your play pledges in please send them in as soon as possible. Next week 1W will have their Power of Play Workshop. You will have the opportunity to see structured play in action and discover how play is an integral part of Early Years learning. Please make sure that you return the reply slip to your class teacher and please wear suitable clothing in order to play with
your child.

We are continuing to run two units alongside each other.
How We Organise Ourselves

Central Idea: Within a community that are different roles and responsibilities

This week the children will send the invitations they they sent in the previous week and will meet various members of staff to interview.

Following on from the pledges from you all, we will be looking at the children’s responsibility at school! We will be discussing this and recording their responsibility during a fire drill on a flow chart. The children will be continuing an ongoing project, building a community. In this session we expect children to work together to build communities from blocks or lego and move away from each starting and completing their own building and putting the pieces together at the end. This needs a lot of communication, cooperation, creativity and make connections to the feelings, ideas and actions of others.

How the World Works

Central Idea:  The Earth’s changes affect the activity of living things

Next week the children in Year 1 will be starting to inquire into day and night by listening to stories, reading non-fiction books and other hands on activities. The children will be learning about day and night and the different activities that might happen in the different stages of the day, including learning about nocturnal and diurnal animals.

In Maths this week the children have enjoyed learning about time. They had a great time using the sand timers and stop watches to explore what they could do in a minute. Some of the activities they timed themselves doing included, building a tower, counting to 100, writing their name and seeing how many star jumps they could do in a minute. The children have also had experience at telling the time to the hour using the class mini clocks.
Central Idea:
Numbers can be used in many ways for different purposes in the real world.
Next week the children will continue learning about the number system and place value. We will begin this unit by exploring the idea of estimation and counting accurately. The children will also be exploring the concept of 1 more and 1 less. On top of these skills which we touched on this week we will also look at subitising (instantaneously recognising the number of objects in a small group without the need to count them) and recalling number bonds to 10 to include addition and subtraction.

In English this week we will be continuing our unit based on writing to socialise. The children will continue to have a go at their own letter writing and have loved using the Post Office in our Shared Area. We will send our letters and respond to any replies as well as welcome different members of staff who have been invited by written invitation to be interviewed by our students.

Next week we will also continue with this focus by looking at the postcard layout, ready to send our letters next week.

We will start to send home non-fiction books from the Learning Centre. Please talk to your child about what they are interested in and which books may be interesting to them.

Phonics

The phonemes for this unit are:

 r  l  d  b  f  h  i  u

Camera Words:  day, of, a, he, today, for

At school, as part of our language rotations all the children read to an adult at least once a week, usually twice.

Golden Book

1F- Kinson Lee

There are so many things to do at the beach, but the best thing to do is to let the children lead the activities, of course they might need some ideas. Remember to take towels or beach mats, sunblock, sunhats, plenty of water maybe some insect repellent and picnic or, if appropriate, barbecue food.
