Year 1 Update – Wk 21
What a busy week! We have had such a fun week at school. The children really enjoyed celebrating 100 days of school on Tuesday. Each child looked for 100 pieces of chocolate in their classroom, made a 100 crown and showed off the 100 items they brought in from home. We also had a great time in the Discovery Dome and made some amazing artefacts for our future museum exhibit! The children have enjoyed making patterns in their Maths lessons.
Sports Day
Next Thursday the children will have their first Sports day. Please make sure the children have a hat, water bottle and appropriate clothing- no long sleeve under garments. Also, if it will be a sunny day, sunscreen must be worn. Please note that if you let us know that you will be taking them from the field then we will not be able to then take them back to school as we will not have room on the bus. We look forward to seeing you then.
Central Idea: Exploring artefacts helps our understanding of people’s histories.
This week the children have been creating their own artefact that will be part of each class’ museum. The children have had to look carefully at the features of their artefact to recreate it from pictures and they have also had to learn what it is and how it has changed into what we use now. They will be expected to talk about the changes that have happened to this item and why the artefact has changed into what we use now when they present the artefact at the museum.
This week Ms Jeves has been very busy working with the children on questioning using a text linked to our next unit. The children have learned to recall everything they know about the topic (spiders) and list all the questions they have about it before they start to read the text, a very important reading skill.
This week we will continue to learn to read and spell words with the unit 4 phonemes: ll, ff, ss, zz and camera Words: you play this come my have.
Please continue to support our work in school by playing the suggested games on the back of the bookmark sent home last week regularly at home.

Experience
A lovely experience you may wish to do with your child this week is to go on a trip to the Man Mo Temple in Sheung Wan. This is a wonderful local tourist attraction built in 1847 and is a great place for the children to learn about local traditions and how people lived in the past. Nearby, just down the hill, is another great antique market on Cat Street. The children have learned a lot about artefacts recently and we are sure there would be many different items that would take the children’s interest. If the children find something for a few dollars that they would like to buy please let the children use money from their own purse and go through the conversations with the market seller by themselves as much as possible. A lovely way to finish the trip would be to take the tram home.
