Sports Day

Next Thursday the children will have their first Sports day. Please make sure the children have a hat, water bottle and appropriate clothing- no long sleeve under garments. Also, if it will be a sunny day, sunscreen must be worn. Please note that if you let us know that you will be taking them from the field then we will not be able to then take them back to school as we will not have room on the bus. We look forward to seeing you then.

Who We are in Place and Time

Central Idea: Exploring artefacts helps our understanding of people’s histories.

This week the children have been creating their own artefact that will be part of each class’ museum. The children have had to look carefully at the features of their artefact to recreate it from pictures and they have also had to learn what it is and how it has changed into what we use now. They will be expected to talk about the changes that have happened to this item and why the artefact has changed into what we use now when they present the artefact at the museum.

This week Ms Jeves has been very busy working with the children on questioning using a text linked to our next unit. The children have learned to recall everything they know about the topic (spiders) and list all the questions they have about it before they start to read the text, a very important reading skill.

Central Idea: Numbers can be used in many ways for different purposes in the real world
This week the children really enjoyed their 100th day of school. Thank you to all the parents who helped with the organising of bringing in 100 items. The children had a lot of fun showing off what they had brought and proving that they had 100 items by grouping the items into groups/lots of 10. Every time the children group items into 10, it really helps support their understanding of place value (tens and ones) and helps them to visualise in their head in the future because they have seen the pieces, physically moved them themselves and solved problems. When the children learn to group items practically with manipulatives they are practising counting in tens, working out how many tens and ones are in a number and showing their working out. Our eventual aim is for all our students to be able to count out 100 items into 10 groups of 10 and many of our children said they had practised doing this at home before they brought the items in. If your child struggles to do this by themselves, practising at home for 10 minutes at a time (no longer unless they carry on by themselves) regularly would be a good way to help them improve their number sense. Working with an adult or on counting out a smaller number is a good way to start. You can use anything to group, you might choose lego, cars or knives and forks.
We have also started a two week unit on Pattern and Function. We have looked into the concept of repeating patterns and the children have had the opportunity to explore pattern through a range of practical activities.
Next week we will be starting a new focus on data handling. We will be collecting data and learning how to represent it in graphs and tables.
Next week the children will be learning how to publish the pages they have made for their book about artefacts. The children will put the holes in the books, tag the pages together and design the front and back covers with the appropriate features (title, author, picture and blurb).
Phonics

This week we will continue to learn to read and spell words with the unit 4 phonemes:   ll, ff, ss, zz and camera Words: you  play  this  come  my  have.

Please continue to support our work in school by playing the suggested games on the back of the bookmark sent home last week regularly at home.
