The students will travel to and from Kowloon Tsai by school bus. If you have any questions about the swimming programme you can contact Mr. Teahan via email timothy.teahan@bhs.edu.
We hope you had a restful break and everyone is ready to go forward into the second half of the term!
The students had their second swimming session this week and we were delighted to see how organised they were as they settling into practicing their skills as well as remembering to bring all of their kits. Swimming will continue for two more Wednesdays. Please note that swimming will take the place of the students’ class P.E times, but they will continue to have P.E with Mr. Teahan on their usual days, which is Friday for all Year 6 classes.
In other news, five Year 6 students from Teach Team were chosen to take part in a STEM Maker’s Challenge Day on Friday, October 18th at Island School. Students all completed two challenges. First, they designed and built a rocket using illustrator software for the design and then laser printed the pieces. Then students created code to navigate a robot car ‘Vex drivetrain’ through a course whilst picking up a rocket and carrying it to its launch pad. Students had the opportunity to launch their rockets sky high and out into the Island School playground at a target as well. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience! Our Beacon Hill School participants were: Cass Lam – 6P, Aaron Wang – 6P, Chloe Leung – 6C, Ella Chan – 6C and Anissa Chen – 6D. Huge congratulations to Chloe Leung for participating on the winning team for the day of competition. Most importantly, the students enjoyed collaborating with their peers from other schools and exploring the amazing Makers Space at Island School.
UOI
Students have inquired into their RSE unit of study. We have completed the ‘Staying Safe: Skills for Health and Well-being’ section this week. Students learned about safety at home, online and in the community. In this unit, students are encouraged to share what they are learning at home with parents. There is a handout that students were asked to share which contains tips about home, community and online safety.
Maths
In maths this week we have started learning about fractions, decimals and percent. Students have completed pre-assessments to help teachers plan tasks and shared their understanding. We hope students will enjoy practicing their skills in these areas.
English
We have continued our work developing our voice. This week we have used the text ‘Mrs. LaRue’s’ which was a great narrative showing how personification, illustrations and using different text types such as news reports and diary entries help the reader understand the writer’s voice. We have given students agency in which character they will write about, the text type used as well as the feeling or mood of the piece. They enjoy being able to have lots of creative choices within their learning to share understanding.
Central Idea
Scientific investigations can help people to make sense of the world.
Lines of Inquiry
- What scientific inquiry is (Form)
- How the scientific process is used (Function)
- How scientific investigations have impacted the world around us (Connection)
During this unit, the aim will be to develop the childrens’ understanding of the scientific process, changing variables and the effect of science around the world.
Number Maths
Place Value
Central Idea: We use the same rules for the computation of decimal fractions as for whole numbers
By the end of Year 6 children should be able to:
Apply place value to partition and rename numbers to thousandths
Recognise, and order integers (including negative integers)
Recognise, model and order decimal fractions to thousandths or beyond.
Round decimal fractions to the nearest tenth or whole number
Central Idea: Writers use carefully crafted language to educate and inspire
This unit will involve us using inspiring and educational language to inform people about the effects of scientific investigation around the world.
Please continue with Mathletics / Prodigy at home.
Reading
Students should have brought home their reading journals this week and they should be reading on a daily basis: on Fridays we update our Reading Diaries with a quality recount entry. Please can we ask parents to sign next to the comment. Students should be reading every day.
Spelling
Each week I would like students to do the following:
- Choose at least 2 spelling activities and have a grown-up initial next to the activity completed.
- Write their spelling words out 3 times in columns. Look, cover, write and check.
- Complete 2 spelling tests at home.
- Science – students can practice presenting their ideas: in front of a mirror to a parent, peer or their pet hamster. Practice verbalising your ideas about your science experiment.
