Diversity House Day

Friday 13th September is Diversity House Day! There will be a special assembly and a lunchtime activity for those in Diversity House. No money is required and children in that house may dress in green clothes. Other children are to wear school uniform. 

Equipment and stationery

Most children have made a great start to the year and have brought the correct equipment. However, some students have not and it is essential that they bring all of the items listed on the letter that they received at the end of Year 5. If your child has lost the letter, they need to ask their class teacher for another copy.

If you have not already done so, please purchase a cheap pair of in-ear earphones for your children to keep in school at all times. We use the Chromebooks to enhance many areas of the curriculum, in order to get the most out of the programs we use, earphones as a must. They are available from Japanese Home Centre (JHC) for 50HKD.

We know the first few weeks back at school are tiring, so please make sure you are all getting enough sleep. If your child is not getting at least 10 hours of sleep a night then they will not be able to reach their potential the next day. Please get plenty of rest.

 

Unit of Inquiry

This week we have been developing our questions into research aims and hypotheses! We looked online for demonstrations we thought looked interesting and we used SOLO Taxonomy to fine-tune our questions into juicy questions. We then looked at our juicy questions and thought about what specific experiments could be made. It was tricky to single out an independent variable and a dependent variable but we persevered and now we are ready to start tinkering with our exhibits! As a special treat, we had a real-life scientist, Dr. Peng Wang, come in to speak with us about his job, how he uses the scientific process and show us a new waterproof coating that he and his team have been working on. It was great to see the real-life applications of our studies. Many thanks to Dr. Wang, our first parent helper of the year! If you are interested in helping out this year, please do get in touch. 

Maths

This week we have been diving into open-ended questions that relate to decimal numbers. We looked at a range of problems and discussed what similar skills we needed to employ in order to come up with answers. It was challenging to think of our maths as a more open and creative subject, where many different strategies could be employed to further explore the deep questions. Here’s an example of one we looked at.

English

Continuing with our work on writers voice, we had a turn at controlling our own writer voices. We chose a subject that we enjoy – such as gymnastics or dinosaurs – and wrote two letters. In one, we had to convince Mrs Cook to add our special subject to the curriculum. In the other, we had to convince a Year 1 class to join a lunchtime club related to our theme. We studied the different kinds of arguments you need to make for different kind of audiences as well as the different tone and language you would use. It was lots of fun.

Place Value

Central Idea: We use the same rules for the computation of decimal fractions as for whole numbers

By the end of Year 6 children should be able to: 

Apply place value to partition and rename numbers to thousandths 

Recognise, and order integers (including negative integers) 

Recognise, model and order decimal fractions to thousandths or beyond. 

Round decimal fractions to the nearest tenth or whole number

This unit will involve us using inspiring and educational language to inform people about the effects of scientific investigation around the world.
