HALF TERM HOLIDAYS

The children need to keep themselves clean to remain healthy and to feel good about themselves. Good personal hygiene will help boost their self-esteem and confidence. You may have to help your child practice good personal hygiene habits. These will become even more important as they grow older and approach puberty. Being able to talk openly and honestly about keeping clean will help them to manage the more difficult personal hygiene issues that are likely to come up when they are teenagers.

Questions you can ask your child instead of ‘How was your day?”

Often when we ask children ”How was your day?”, we are given the answer ”good” or ”fine”. More than just finding out how their day was, we want to help children become problems solvers and independent learners. Good conversations help them see that we care about their lives, we are there to support them, and to help them develop strategies for solving problems themselves.

Here are some questions you could ask your child after school.

What made you smile today?
Can you tell me an example of kindness you saw/showed?
What did you do that was creative?
What is the most popular game at break time?
What was the best thing that happened today?
Did you help anyone today?
Did you tell anyone “thank you?”
Who did you sit with at lunch?
What made you laugh?
Did you learn something you didn’t understand?
Who inspired you today?
What is something you heard that surprised you?
What is something you saw that made you think?
Who did you play with today?
Tell me something you know today that you didn’t know yesterday.
What is something that challenged you?
Did you like your lunch?
Rate your day on a scale from 1-10.
How were you brave today?
What questions did you ask at school today?
Tell us your top two things from the day (before you can be excused from the dinner table!).
What are you looking forward to tomorrow?
What are you reading?
What was the hardest rule to follow today?
Teach me something I don’t know.
If you could change one thing about your day, what would it be?

What made you feel happy?

What made you feel proud?

Did you learn any new words today?

If I called your teacher tonight, what would he/she tell me about you?

We know the first few weeks back at school can be tiring, so please make sure your children are all getting enough sleep. If your child is not getting at least 10 hours of sleep a night then they will not be able to reach their potential the next day. Please get plenty of rest.

Fruity Friday

Every Friday your child should bring a healthy and fruity snack. The Eco Squad needs the peel to create compost. Year 6 should be setting the example, so please, please, please bring in fruit to eat on Friday and pop the peel in the green bucket outside the butterfly garden.

Parent Teacher Consultations

Our first Parent Teacher Consultations this year will be on Tuesday 9^th and Thursday 11^thOctober. This is a valuable opportunity for you to find out more about your child’s learning in Inquiry, English and Mathematics through conversation with their class teacher. Bookings for appointments are made through the Gateway and this is available for families with more than one child at school from 3pm Monday 17^th September and for all our families from 3pm Friday 21^st September. This means that families with more than one child in school can get appointments on the same day. E C O S Q U A D

The children are working hard to upcycle and rescue items that would usually be thrown away. We will then give the finished product to people at school to improve their well being.

It was great to see parents and students at this meeting. Please make sure all forms and payments are returned to school as soon as possible.

Transdisciplinary Theme: Sharing the Planet

Central Idea- Reaching a resolution during periods of conflict is influenced by the actions and reactions of all involved.

Lines of Inquiry – We will inquire into…

Causes of conflict (causation, perspective)
Conflict resolution and management (responsibility)
Our responsibility as a member of a community. (Responsibility)

The children will be thinking about different types of conflict which they may have encountered or read about. In class, we will be working together to identify different strategies to help resolve different conflict whether it is at home, in school or thinking about the wider world on a global scale.

Number Maths – Operations

Central Idea –We use the same rules for the computation of decimal fractions as for whole numbers

How are the four rules related to each other?

In what ways can we record the rules for a pattern in addition and subtraction?

Strand Maths – Measurement

Central Idea – Conversion of units and measurements allows us to make sense of the world we live in.

In strand math, we will explore area and perimeter of a triangle and identify the properties which will help us to calculate the measurements.

We will continue to draw inferences when we read by looking at a variety of passages from texts. Year 6 will be focusing on the story ‘Half A Man’ by Michael Morpurgo using the illustrations and descriptions to apply their learning of inference.
