Swimming- Remember to bring: swimmers, change of underwear, $5 coin, swimming cap, goggles, and a towel.
Equipment and stationery – most children have made a great start to the year and have brought the correct equipment. However, some students have not and it is essential that they bring all of the items listed on the letter that they received at the end of Year 5.
If your child has lost the letter, they need to ask their class teacher for another copy.
If you have not already done so, please purchase a cheap pair of in-ear earphones for your children to keep in school at all times. We use the Chromebooks to enhance many areas of the curriculum, in order to get the most out of the programs we use, earphones is a must. They are available from Japanese Home Centre (JHC) for 50HKD.
Parent Teacher Consultations
Our first Parent Teacher Consultations this year will be on Tuesday 9th and Thursday 11th October. This is a valuable opportunity for you to find out more about your child’s learning in Inquiry, English and Mathematics through conversation with their class teacher. Bookings for appointments are made through the Gateway and this is available for families with more than one child at school from 3pm Monday 17th September and for all our families from 3pm Friday 21st September. This means that families with more than one child in school can get appointments on the same day. For more details please see this week’s school newsletter. https://www.beaconhill.edu.hk/bhs-news/#newsletter-2018-19
Eco Squad Club Began on Thursday, with members from Year 4, 5 and 6. Mr Glencross and Mrs Chand joined us and we began making organic mosquito repellent. Check out the photos below.
Transdisciplinary Theme : How we Organise Ourselves
Central Idea : Leaders influence communities to affect change.
Lines of Inquiry – We will inquire into…
- The traits of leadership
- The responsibilities of leadership
- The impact of decision making
Concepts …
Form – We will understand that leaders have a range of different characteristics.
Responsibility – We will understand that with leadership there comes responsibility
Function – We will understand the purpose and impact that leadership can have on us
Learner Profile : principled, courageous
Attitudes: commitment, integrity
The students have been inquiring into leadership by following our custom made inquiry cycle. Have a look at the images below to see the vast range of learning that is taking place.
Number Maths – Place Value
Central Idea – The base 10 place value system extends infinitely in two directions.
We have been inquiring into rounding and using the visualiser to aid us when explaining our thinking. Check out the action shot below.
Year 6 will begin to inquire into operations next week, focussing on addition and subtraction.
Central Idea – Conversion of units and measurements allows us to make sense of the world we live in.
In strand math, we will explore conversions of units of measure by looking at and estimating distance as well as body measurements.
We have continued to learn about measurement and some classes managed to dodge the rain in order to measure Ede Road playground.
This week we have continued to work on our comprehension strategies. We have been reading and analysing poetry and speeches, using our own keys to help us to display our thinking. We have also used our advanced skills in English to present our learning for the Unit of Inquiry. The children below are showing off all they have learnt about their chosen leader by using their Chromebooks.
