Welcome back to BHS to everyone for this 2017-18 academic year!  Each week one of us from the Year 6 team will publish all our important Year 6 information, events, dates and notices on this platform so as to keep you fully informed of all the happenings in our year band.  Mr Hoskins, Mr Hubbard or Miss Younie will take turns each week to update you and we will do our best to include lots of photos so you can really see the great work that your child is doing. Usually, we just include photos from our own particular classes each week to ensure coverage of all children throughout the year. May we please ask that you check the Weekly Update each week with your child…the new one is uploaded each Friday afternoon.

Equipment and stationery – most children have made a great start to the year and have brought the correct equipment. However, some students have not and it is essential that they bring all of the items listed on the letter that they received at the end of Year 5.

If your child has lost the letter, they need to ask their class teacher for another copy.

If you have not already done so, please purchase a cheap pair of in-ear earphones for your children to keep in school at all times. We use the Chromebooks to enhance many areas of the curriculum, in order to get the most out of the programs we use, earphones as a must. They are available from Japanese Home Centre (JHC) for 50HKD.

We know the first few weeks back at school are tiring, so please make sure you are all getting enough sleep. If your child is not getting at least 10 hours of sleep a night then they will not be able to reach their potential the next day. Please get plenty of rest.
Fruity Friday

Every Friday your child should bring a healthy and fruity snack. The Eco Squad needs the peel to create compost. Year 6 should be setting the example, so please, please, please bring in fruit to eat on Friday and pop the peel in the green bucket outside the butterfly garden.
New Look Green Team….
If you are interested in joining the Green Team then email Mr Hoskins listing the reasons why you think you would make a great Eco Squad member.
This has been such a fun way to start the year. We have experienced being leaders, created beautiful art, had fun with maths and risen to the challenge of planning and writing speeches to perform next week. Check out the photos below of us enjoying our first full week as Year 6 students.
Some of the students were lucky enough to help out with showing potential new parents around our school and did a brilliant job too. Ms Jeves was so impressed and gave the Year 6 team some excellent feedback.
Mr Pheasant spoke to the children about the expectations of being a Year 6 student at BHS. The children listened attentively and now know what is expected of them as ambassadors of the school.

Persuasive language and public speaking

Each child is required to write and perform a 1 minute speech to sell themselves and hopefully land the job of House Captain, Student Council member or Eco Squad rep. This week we have spent time researching what a good speech needs and creating our own. We have looked at the use of non-verbal communication, persuasive language and determined our own success criteria for what is essential when speaking in front of an audience.

When watching other speakers we have taken notes and synthesised information in order to recognise what new learning has taken place. We cannot wait until next week to see how amazing the speeches will be.

Prepare for your speech: Over the weekend you should be getting ready to deliver your speech next week. You need to learn it and speak with confidence. Use your weekend to rehearse in front of others or use FlipGrid to record yourself and watch it back.

Reading : Home readers will be taken home next week unless your class teacher says otherwise.

  • Miss Younie – Mathletics
  • Mrs Fletcher – Mathletics
