Year 6 School Closure Learning
Make sure you come back to school with a clear idea of the interests that could drive your exhibition!
Happy Holidays! Have fun, relax, enjoy time with your family and be safe.
Wednesday 14th February
Home Science Experiments
(adult supervision required)
Think about the interviews you did in class and the amazing questions you created.
If you had the chance to interview your chosen scientist what 5 questions would you ask them?
Tuesday 13th February
Have you finished your inquiry?
Are you still working on your presentation?
Make sure you get someone else to proofread it.
Is it the best work you can do? If not go back and improve it!
Finished work can be printed once your back at school.
Check out this website;
http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/experiments.html
Remember: Any science experiments must be done with an adult, safety first!
Monday 12th February
- You should have organised your notes and determined what’s important. You should also have selected pictures, quotes and images to help educate your reader.
- The next stage is to present your information. Google docs, Canva? Your choice.
- Does your presentation;
- Tell us about your scientist?
- Explain their area of science?
- Show how their work has had an impact on our world today?
- Think about fonts, colour, use of pictures, is it eye-catching?
- Don’t forget to reference all of your sources!
Friday 9th February
- Yesterday we asked you to gather notes on your chosen scientist
- Today you will need to determine what information is important. Think carefully about our 3rd Line of Inquiry, ‘How has your scientist had an impact on the world we live in today?’
- You can use a highlighter, underline with a pencil or circle notes that you think are important. (imagine your audience is a Year 5 student who knows nothing about your scientist)
- Don’t forget to select images, pictures, quotes that you think will help your reader to learn about your scientist.
Mood/Inspiration Boards
- On the 1st March (your first week back at school) we will be having a big meeting in the hall with your parents. Each of you will bring your Mood/Inspiration Board to that meeting.
Make sure this is finished before your return to school. You could even start a new one! Remember this board tells us all about your interests, likes, wonderings and can include words, pictures, quotes, symbols, actually anything!
More Home Science!
Remember this must be done with an adult.
Click on ‘Science BOB’
Thursday 8th February
We would like you to continue to inquire into a famous scientist, past or present, of your choice.
Use the internet to find appropriate websites. Think about your keyword searches, use of triangulation and applying CARP to evaluate the site.
Gather research, images, quotes and make notes on your chosen scientist.

Keep up with your reading over the holidays!
Wednesday 14th February
Continue with English tasks set from previous days.
Select one other word search to complete in your spelling journal. Identify any words in your spelling lists that you would like to incorporate into your writing in order to up-level your writing level.
Select a book you have read recently and complete your reading reflection in your reading journal. Remember you don’t have to retell a scene from the story, you might share something new you learned, the moral of the story, make a connection with another story, share new vocabulary or describe a particular event/ character/ setting that interested you in the story- How did the author make this interesting for you the reader?
Tuesday 13th February
We have begun to think about the importance of being skeptical about what we see on the internet. Watch this short video to get you thinking about how you can watch out for fake news.
https://safeshare.tv/x/ss5a7b0a9b2bfab
Now read the article that can be found here;
https://newsela.com/read/google-fact-check-tool
Remember to stick to the site to stay safe. You can make the text easier or harder by changing the lexile number on the title bar.
Having read the article and watched the clip take some time to talk to your family about their understanding of fake news and share what you have learned.
Play the word and number game countdown
http://happysoft.org.uk/countdown/wordgame.php
Record the longest words you can come up with. Don’t forget to have a go at the number game and the conundrum as well.
Monday 12th February
Book-a-likes
Create a simple poster on paper or using Google drawings to show your Book-a-like connections and more if you can. The idea is that these posters could be displayed in the library to give other readers suggestions about what to read. For example,
“If you enjoyed reading about the dramatic adventures of the Greek gods in “Percy Jackson, The Lightning Thief” by Rick Riordan meet an alternative and very funny version of those same gods in “Who Let the Gods Out” by Maz Evans.“
Year 6 remember if you use images for your poster, make sure they are labelled for reuse, are copyright free or reference them, in a small font, at the bottom of the poster (write the URL where you found them).
Complete a word search in your spelling journal and practise your spelling list words you need to learn this week.
Watch the clip on BrainPop about ‘Research’
https://www.brainpop.com/english/studyandreadingskills/research/
What keywords stand out for you- why are they important when you are researching?
Create a word bank and write the useful tips and definitions of these words as helpful vocabulary when researching.
You may have to do some more exploring to find out what the words mean an why they are important to think about when carrying out research.
Friday 9th February
Interview Tips for Kids
Watch the video clip above about tips for children when carrying out an interview.
Take notes on important points, helpful suggestions or key reminders you think would be useful for you to carry out your next interview.
Select one of the ‘Cloze’ tasks to complete from your spelling journal.
Practise words you need to learn from your spelling lists or words you have spelt incorrectly in a spelling test.
Book-a-likes
Start by finding one of your favourite books from your bookshelf. You need to know it really well. Now find another that is not by the same author. Can you connect the books in anyway? Perhaps there is a similar plot line, the characters have similar traits or there is a particularly astounding fact. Be ready to record these connections. Now choose another book, can you connect it to the second you chose?
Thursday 8th February
- Go to Brainpop and watch the clip on Internet Searches.
- Have a go at the quiz to see how well you took in the information. You might need to watch the clip again to get 100%!
- Now think about what you found out that could answer these three questions…be prepared to share your learning when you are back at school so you might need to take notes.
- Why was the word weighted used?
- How does a search engine and a human differ in the way they look for information?
- Why would you use a “+” in a search?
Reading Reflection
Select a book you have read recently and complete your reading reflection in your reading journal. Remember you don’t have to retell a scene from the story, you might share something new you learned, the moral of the story, make a connection with another story, share new vocabulary or describe a particular event/ character/ setting that interested you in the story- How did the author make this interesting for you the reader?
Spelling
Complete a word search in your spelling journal and practise your spelling list words you need to learn this week.

Hey Year 6. I thought it might be quite nice to continue our Micro:bit learning while you are not in school. We can do this using the micro:bit simulator without actually having the device. Anything you make can be tested on the Micro:bit when we return to school.
What I would like you to do is to create a game. There are lots of tutorials online for making micro:bit games and it doesn’t need to be complicated at all. I’ve linked to a few tutorials at the bottom.
Here below is a video I made of me making a micro:bit shaking game. You have to keep shaking the micro:bit to win, if you get tired and slow down your score decreases and you have to try again.
If you could publish your project and then post the URL to the Google Classroom assignment that would be great.

Year 6 PE Home Learning
Cricket
Cricket can be broken down into three key areas – bowling, batting and fielding. Each class is at various stages of the skills learning so try and practise the ones you have covered in class.
Bowling
If you have forgotten how to bowl use this video on how to bowl –https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvxfr7SXIB0 Practise bowling with a friend or practise bowling against a wall. Try and avoid throwing the ball.
Batting
Have a partner throw or bowl a ball at you and practise your hitting skills. If you don’t have a cricket bat use another striking implement to help – tennis racquet, etc.
Fielding
With a partner practise throwing and catching a tennis ball. Try catching it one handed. Throw some high balls as well to try and catch.
Athletics
Athletics can be broken down into three key areas – running, jumping and throwing. Each class is at various stages of the skills learning so try and practise the ones you have covered in class.
Running – if you have an athletics track near you try and have a go at running 100m. Warm up first and make sure your body is ready. If you can time yourself that would be great. Do it two or three times over the next week and see if you can improve your best time. Then have a go at running two laps (800m). Same as the 100m try and improve each time.
Jumping for distance – use a surface that is not hard. Practice jumping for distance – set yourself a mark and try to beat it each time. Remember to warm up properly. Do some research (youtube has 100s of videos!) on how to do the long jump and use the skills learnt to improve your technique and distance.
Throwing – you can combine this with your cricket fielding practise. Find yourself a large space and see how far you can throw a tennis ball. Use a run up and work on the mechanics of throwing. https://youtu.be/F-5fPe6wZT4?t=58 covers the very simple basics of throwing.
Email me timothy.teahan@bhs.edu.hk to let me know how you got on with your cricket and athletics skills. If you want to send a short video of you practising your cricket and athletics please do so as well.
Sports Heroes
With your class teachers you are researching a famous scientist. I would like you to choose a famous sportsman or woman (past or present) and tell me all about them. Somethings you might to include are: why you chose them, what makes them famous, what have they done that is outstanding, what makes them your hero, etc. Email me or share your google doc (timothy.teahan@bhs.edu.hk) when you have finished.
Basketball Club Members
Please try and practise your basketball skills. Try and find a basketball court and practise shooting. Ideally play with someone else and do some attacking and defending skills. Remember to try and always get the rebound! Use the video below to help with your shooting technique.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2f9YBKAxmqQ
Rugby Club Members
Practise your rugby passing skills. If you don’t have a rugby shaped ball try using any shaped ball. Try some one on one drills with a partner. Set out a boundary and try to avoid getting tagged as you try and score a try.
Have a go at learning the spin (or spiral pass). This video will teach you the technique – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=madM6Jvi_5I
Login to Google Classroom and complete the 12 Bar Blues assignment. Write your thoughts on the worksheet provided and paste the URL links of the two recordings you have chosen.
Submit when you have completed it.
