Leadership and Activities in Year 6
In Year 6, students have many opportunities to lead and participate in ways that directly impact BHS. Students have been settling into their regular routines and activities. Students have been busy with House Captain meetings to prepare interesting assemblies, upcoming activities and future actions. Student Council are developing ideas for new school clubs and a fun, logo competition. Orchestra students met in the Music room on Wednesday for the first time. The regular routines of sports clubs and extracurriculars are setting off for Term 1 as well. Students are encouraged to use their diary to track all their weekly activities, so they are better prepared. Thank you to everyone for your support in any and all changes related to clubs and teams due to weather conditions.
Unit of Inquiry
As a year group we are inquiring into the “How the World Works” through the Central Idea ‘Scientific investigations can help people to make sense of the world.’ As a culminating activity, next Wednesday, September 25th, students will share their understanding in a mini-Science Fair showcasing their understanding to all Year 6 students and teachers. Students have been individually testing an experiment in their chosen area of science and applying the scientic process to their interest.
Students reflected on their experiment, considered if it was a fair test, what the results show, and making any alterations to their procedures.The aim is for children to be able to replicate the experiment at the Science Fair and share their learning about why this has happened and field questions confidently showing good subject knowledge. These are skills which we are hoping the children will begin to refine before exhibition.
Maths
In maths this week we have continued to develop our confidence in working with decimal numbers, speciifically using the four operations. In strand maths we have been developing our ability to graph information appropriately, consider the types of graph to use, what scale is most appropriate and using clear labelling. Students will then use these skills to graph the results of their experiments in order to make their results clear.
English
In English this week we have continued to identify how an author uses voice to connect with the reader. We looked at this from the point of view of emotions, comparing three different texts which all represent the emotion of sadness. Students then explored techniques the author used to present this emotion through their writing. We presented them with a variety of texts to help them. We are now using some of these techniques to write our own short piece in a style of their choice. Sadness is quite sad of course, but it was quite exciting when the students would debate “who is the appropriate audience?’ and discuss ‘how does the author show the emotion?’ Sadly… we are ready to move on and explore other more fun emotions in Year 6! Will it be fear, happiness or some other emotion? During Learning Centre, 6P had the opportunity to find non-fiction books to support their scientific investigations. Students took it a step further and cooperated to help each other find and share resources they gathered.

During this unit, the aim will be to develop the children’s understanding of the scientific process, changing variables and the effect of science around the world.
Number Maths
Place Value
Central Idea: We use the same rules for the computation of decimal fractions as for whole numbers
By the end of Year 6 children should be able to:
Apply place value to partition and rename numbers to thousandths
Recognise, and order integers (including negative integers)
Recognise, model and order decimal fractions to thousandths or beyond.
Round decimal fractions to the nearest tenth or whole number
Central Idea: Writers use carefully crafted language to educate and inspire
This unit will involve us using inspiring and educational language to inform people about the effects of scientific investigation around the world.
Please continue with Mathletics /Prodigy at home.
Reading
Students should have brought home their reading journals this week and they should be reading on a daily basis, on Fridays we update our Reading Diaries with a quality recount entry. Please can we ask parents to sign next to the comment. Students should be reading every day.
Spelling
Each week I would like students to do the following:
- Choose at least 2 of spelling activities and have a grown-up initial next to the activity completed.
- Write their spelling words out 3 times in columns. Look, cover, write and check.
- Complete 2 spelling tests at home.
- Science- students can practice presenting their ideas: in front of a mirror to a parent, peer or their pet hamster. Practice verbalising your ideas about your science experiment.
