Professor Peter Sullivan
Peter Sullivan is Professor of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education, at Monash University in Australia. He is the immediate past President of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers and was the lead writer of the Australian Mathematics curriculum.
Professor Sullivan is one of the world’s leading authorities in Mathematics and he will be making a visit to Beacon Hill School this November. During his visit, Professor Sullivan will work alongside the teachers to challenge all our students to reach their full potential in Mathematics through the use of open-ended, rich learning tasks and problems.
We are thrilled to announce that Professor Sullivan will run a workshop for parents in order to enhance your understanding of how you may help your children in the development of Mathematical thinking. This is for parents only, there is no need for children to attend.
An e-notice will be sent to all parents, please let us know if you are attending.
We look forward to seeing you at the workshop.
Stationery
It has been noted that many children are without the correct equipment and therefore certain lessons are challenging for them. In Year 6 we ask students to bring their own stationary kits to school. As leaners they are expected to be organised, prepared, responsible and Independent, this is good practice for when they go to Secondary School. From discussions with the children many of them are missing, calculators (not scientific), geometry sets, 30cm rulers, scissors and headphones (a cheap set can be purchased for around 15HKD). Please talk to your child about their stationery needs.
Year 6 Action Board – Global Goals
In September 2015, 193 world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. If these Goals are completed, it would mean an end to extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030.
Our governments have a plan to save our planet…it’s our job to make sure they stick to it.
The Global Goals are only going to work if we fight for them and you can’t fight for your rights if you don’t know what they are. We believe the Goals are only going to be completed if we can make them famous.
In Year 6 we are keeping track of all the amazing Action happening at school and at home.
6Y- Nikita Dawes
6D- Tina Nishikiori
6H- Andrea Ho & Amanda Hockerberg
Transdisciplinary Theme: Sharing the Planet
Central Idea- Reaching a resolution during periods of conflict is influenced by the actions and reactions of all involved.
Lines of Inquiry – We will inquire into…
- Causes of conflict (causation, perspective)
- Conflict resolution and management (responsibility)
- Our responsibility as a member of a community. (Responsibility)
After a busy week at camp we will reflect on our new experiences and challenges overcome throughout the week. When we return we will be half way through our second unit and therefore beginning to investigate our chosen personal inquiry. It is important that we choose the most effective method for gathering research as well as sticking to the deadline. We look forward to exploring the different areas of conflict you have chosen to inquire into.
Number Maths – We will be investigating different strategies used to solve decimal multiplication problems as well as identifying the important link multiplication and division have in maths.
We will continue to use our book stacks to practice inferring from our chosen texts. Using a range of sentence openers to support our thinking when making sense of the sense using context clues. We will also incorporate our camp experience to write a balanced argument using the features of an exposition.
Camp Preparation : Please spend this weekend getting ready for camp. Make sure you are part of the packing process at home in preparation for camp. Ensure you have everything you need, check that all items are clearly labelled and have a go at making your bed to get ready for the week ahead!
Spend some time on the OB website to give you a taste of what you will be experiencing.

Spelling : The children should be tested on their words at home 3 times per week ready for our buddy test on Friday. Any words that the children spell incorrectly during the buddy test on Friday will get carried over to next week’s ‘Words I need to learn…’ All children need to remember to bring in their Spelling Journals each day.
Reading : Each child should be reading throughout the week. Don’t forget to think about your weekly reflection for your Reading Journals!
