Year 5 have had a busy return to school after the October holiday. As we conclude our Migration unit the children have had the opportunity to select an aspect of Migration in which they would like to inquire further. The children were introduced to an inquiry cycle which guides them through their personal inquiry journey. The students selected a range of areas such as investigating further some of the different types of migration, looking into the impact natural disasters have had on migration, the consequences of war and patterns of migration to different countries. The children displayed their new learning in a variety of ways- this was a great way to celebrate their learning.
Swimming was pretty tiring this week, however, the children enjoyed their first lesson. Remember to drink plenty of water before and after lessons!
The children have been reading a variety of migration stories as a class and thinking about the perspective of each character. It has been interesting to try and put ourselves in the ‘shoes’ of someone else to imagine what their experience of migration was like. The children used some of these ideas and thoughts when writing their own short story based on a stage of migration.
Year 5 have been practicing their knowledge of plotting and locating coordinates using grids. They have done this through a series of games called ‘Battleships’ as well creating coordinate art. This has been a good opportunity to play against other students and understand x and y axis.
Central Idea
Migration has an impact on people and society.
Lines of Inquiry
- The reasons why people migrate (causation)
- The challenges and opportunities of migration (change)
- The impact of migration on individuals and society (perspective)
Solo Taxonomy – Mr Pheasant
SOLO Taxonomy is a powerful model of learning that is both easy to use and highly effective in advancing and deepening learning across the curriculum. We will be reviewing where we are with our understanding into this unit and generate questions for personal inquiries.
Central Idea
Strategies for whole number computation can apply to fractional and decimal computation.
An inquiry into…
- efficient mental strategies that can be used to solve addition and subtraction of decimal fractions
- efficient written strategies that can be used to solve addition and subtraction decimal fractions
Here are some links to help you!
Central Idea
Accuracy of measurements depends on the situation and precision of the tool.
- How tools and procedures can be used to measure accurately.
- How tools and procedures can be used to solve measurement problems.
- The connection between measurements and other units of maths (conversion)
For the next few weeks we will be looking into connecting the 12 and 24 hour time to timetables, solving problems involving different in time and measuring, estimating and comparing angles.
We are continuing to make sense of what we read by applying our self-monitoring strategies. We are trying to do this when reading in the classroom from book stacks or class libraries, selecting books from the learning centre as well as researching online.

House Points
- 5W – Complete personal inquiries (if necessary)
- Read the Weekly Update
- Mathletics – continue with the set tasks
- Spelling – each week the children are sent home their 10 personal words that they need to learn for the week. Please, can a parent (or responsible adult) support the children by...testing them (written or oral), getting them to put their words into interesting sentences (written or oral), discussing the meanings of the words, thinking about synonyms and antonyms of that word, discussing words with a similar meaning etc.
- Reading – levelled home readers will be starting to come home soon. The children will be choosing levelled readers based on their own ability and are expected to read each night for at least 20mins at home with a parent. The children need to record their reading in their Reading Journals and parents can you please sign your child’s journal each night. Journals need to be returned to school each morning to be checked and will come home each evening (except Friday). Children may use Big Universe twice a week (only) as their choice of home reading.
- Mandarin Home Learning– All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.
