Dear Parents,
As you will be fully aware, the Year 5 students will be hosting a Christmas Market for the school on Thursday 12th December in the school hall. They are currently hard at work with making Christmas crafts and Christmas-themed food items and are very excited to share their learning with you. We would like to invite all parents to come and help the children set up their stalls in the hall between 9 – 9.45am. This would also be a great time for you to talk to your child about their learning experiences throughout the unit.
Due to the fact that we have to be ready to start selling to the other year groups at 10.00am, unfortunately, there will not be the opportunity for you to purchase any of the products as we need to ensure that we have enough stock for all the children in school.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Year 5 team
Businesses up and running!
All business groups have established clear mission statements and essential agreements for their businesses and are making purchases of resources they need for prototyping and production. Mr Pheasant and Mr Lowe have also been working closely with the accountants and web developers of each business group to keep accounts and advertise products using spreadsheets and Google Sites. We are approaching this unit with less structure than we have other units in the past, students’ learner agency and their ability to collaborate and solve problems are really shining through!
Students continue with production in preparation for the big day. They are also branching off to fulfill their own responsibilities to the team: accountants keeping track of the costing, marketing managers collecting some data on product pricing, product designers checking the quality of the final products etc.
Central Idea
Strategies for whole number computation can apply to fractional and decimal computation.
An inquiry into…
- efficient mental strategies that can be used to solve addition and subtraction of decimal fractions
- efficient written strategies that can be used to solve addition and subtraction decimal fractions
For the next few weeks, we will continue to practise our knowledge of addition and subtraction within the structure of a business in terms of budgeting and pricing.
Here are some links to help you!
Central Idea
Manipulation of shape and space takes place for a particular purpose.
- Creating, describing and visualising 2D & 3D shapes
- Transforming shapes
- Locating points on a grid
For the next few weeks, we will be learning to transform, reduce and enlarge 2D shapes. We will also be learning to describe and model congruence and similarity in 2D shapes.
Congratulations to these children for receiving Golden Book certificates in the past weeks!

- Read the Weekly Update
- Mathletics – continue with the set tasks
- Spelling – each week the children are sent home their 10 personal words that they need to learn for the week. Please, can a parent (or responsible adult) support the children by...testing them (written or oral), getting them to put their words into interesting sentences (written or oral), discussing the meanings of the words, thinking about synonyms and antonyms of that word, discussing words with a similar meaning etc.
- Reading – levelled home readers will be starting to come home soon. The children will be choosing levelled readers based on their own ability and are expected to read each night for at least 20mins at home with a parent. The children need to record their reading in their Reading Journals and parents can you please sign your child’s journal each night. Journals need to be returned to school each morning to be checked and will come home each evening (except Friday). Children may use Big Universe twice a week (only) as their choice of home reading.
- Mandarin Home Learning– All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.
