Christmas Market – 12th December 2019
Our new unit started this week! Students are already in Business teams and have started the long journey of creating a business and making a profit. As with all businesses, there is a need for some capital to start the venture. Each group consists of 5 students and we would like to ask all parents to donate $200 to their child’s team. This would give all businesses a start-up of $1000. The good news is that your investment will be repaid to you after the Christmas Market. You will have already received an e-notice giving you further information regarding this payment.
We are looking for any Christmas related items you no longer want or need. String, ribbon, boxes, packaging, stuffing, wrapping paper, old Christmas cards, gift tags, ornaments, parcel paper, greaseproof paper, tinsel… anything you can spare would be much appreciated, just drop it off at your child’s classroom, Thank you.
Unit of Inquiry reports
Please note that our first reported unit goes live on the Gateway today, November 1st 2019.
Ms Jeves is hosting a Graphic Novel Competition! Click on the link to find out more.
As a provocation for their Business Unit, the students had the tough challenge of selling ‘Green Spaghetti’ to the rest of the class. We were amazed at the range of commercials they put together. We saw dance, song, drama, mime, comedy, storytelling and lots of persuasive language.
5H and 1G – Halloween Party
In order to make business teams the students had to think very carefully about their own personal skills

- How tools and procedures can be used to solve measurement problems.
- The connection between measurements and other units of maths (conversion)
For the next few weeks, we will be looking into connecting the 12 and 24 hour time to timetables, solving problems involving different in time and measuring, estimating and comparing angles.
We are continuing to make sense of what we read by applying our self-monitoring strategies. We are trying to do this when reading in the classroom from book stacks or class libraries, selecting books from the learning centre as well as researching online.

- Mathletics – continue with the set tasks
- Spelling – each week the children are sent home their 10 personal words that they need to learn for the week. Please, can a parent (or responsible adult) support the children by...testing them (written or oral), getting them to put their words into interesting sentences (written or oral), discussing the meanings of the words, thinking about synonyms and antonyms of that word, discussing words with a similar meaning etc.
- Reading – levelled home readers will be starting to come home soon. The children will be choosing levelled readers based on their own ability and are expected to read each night for at least 20mins at home with a parent. The children need to record their reading in their Reading Journals and parents can you please sign your child’s journal each night. Journals need to be returned to school each morning to be checked and will come home each evening (except Friday). Children may use Big Universe twice a week (only) as their choice of home reading.
- Mandarin Home Learning– All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.
