Snacks – Some of the children have been coming in with some very healthy snacks already but please do try and include healthy snacks as much as possible. Snacks which are high in sugar can lead to difficulties concentrating due to their quick release of energy. Some good ideas might be fruit, wholewheat crackers or low sugar yoghurts. These healthy snacks not only support their body development but can also improve their attention span too.
Sleep – As always, it takes a little time for the children to readjust to their early mornings after a long summer holiday. Please do try and help them get as much sleep as possible. 9-10-year-olds should be aiming for around 10 hours a night.
Learning Centre – On days where the children visit the learning centre with their class, they will need to bring their book bags if they wish to borrow books. These days are as follows. The children also have access to our Learning Centre before school – so if they happen to forget their LC book on their specific day they can always pop up there and exchange it in the mornings after they unpack their school bag.
5D – Monday
5F – Tuesday
5C – Thursday
Home Readers – we are in the process of assessing all the children on their current reading level. At the very least it this takes at least 15 minutes per child! We work one-to-one with each child to read a passage ask them comprehension questions about it. So, please, please please keep up with your book discussions at home every night. The questioning and getting the children talking about their home reading book is just as important (if not more!) than just decoding the words. Most children who were on ‘Library’ level last year have been moved to ‘White’ level reading books – this is to ensure that they too are borrowing booked suitable for their level and they haven’t been sneaking home books that are too easy for them!
Headphones – can all children make sure their headphones are at school every day, please? Some activities we do need them to use headphones and as they are part of their required stationery list they should be here in school ready for use when required.
Parent Teacher Consultations
Our first Parent Teacher Consultations this year will be on Tuesday 9th and Thursday 11th October. This is a valuable opportunity for you to find out more about your child’s learning in Inquiry, English and Mathematics through conversation with their class teacher. Bookings for appointments are made through the Gateway and this is available for families with more than one child at school from 3pm Monday 17th September and for all our families from 3pm Friday 21st September. This means that families with more than one child in school can get appointments on the same day. For more details please see this week’s school newsletter.https://www.beaconhill.edu.hk/bhs-news/#newsletter-2018-19
English: Reading – this week we have continued on with our comprehension strategy of self-monitoring. 5F spent some time updating their book stacks so that they could have access to some more challenging texts to practice their self-monitoring strategy. We will be working on an electronic book stack using Big Universe in the coming weeks.
English: Self-Monitoring – this week 5F worked on constructing their own symbols that they can use whilst they are reading to help them self-monitor to help them with their comprehension.
English: Word and Sentence – this week we investigated better words and tried to find alternatives to using ‘nice’. We certainly honed our thesaurus sills at the same time. And, we did find some spectacular alternatives. Let’s hope we can all use them in our independent writing.
English: Descriptive Writing – here’s us working on writing a really well constructed descriptive paragraph…..now to editing and improving next week!
Number Maths – we continued on with all our number work dealing with Place Value. Renaming, recording in expanded notation, rounding to various numbers and working with larger number and decimals were all on our agenda this week. We’ve also been learning to evaluate our maths strategies and reflect on our learning after each learnring engagement.
UOI 2 Water Pre-assessment – in preparation for our next UOI we all completed a Water Pre-assessment. An electronic Drawing was sent to all the children to complete so we can see what they already know! We then use these to plan our series of learning engagements in the next unit.
Artist Study: Romero Britto – We’ve been working on our very own artwork inspired on Brazillian artist Romero Britto. Bright colours, black lines and simple pictures all featured in our work! So much or our amazing artwork is up and around the school…we’ve produced so much this unit that it just won’t fit in the room. Next time you’re in, have a nosey about!
\
Well done to Anna in 5D and Alena in 5F for posting on our playground Student Noticeboard in their break times! Well done girls.
Central Idea – Artists can use a process to express messages and ideas.
- the tools and techniques artists use (form)
- how messages are interpreted and conveyed (perspective)
- how can I improve my work (responsibility)
- patterns and relationships of tenths and hundredths
- the patterns of 6+ digit numbers and how they are represented
- creating, describing and visualising 2D and 3D shapes
- transforming shapes
- locating points on a grid
Writing Focus – In writing this week, we have continued to look at sentence formation, in particular, the placement of words and the impact this has on the focus of sentences. We have looked at the identifying features of clauses and understanding their application. Students have been encouraged to work on building good quality sentences to improve the flow and flair of their writing.
5C – Garrett Cheung
Music – Jafar Wong (5C)
5D – Charlotte Cheung
- Read the Weekly Update
- Mathletics – continue with the set tasks
- Spelling – The children are sent home their 10 personal words that they need to learn for the week. The will happen on a Monday for 5F, Wednesday for 5D and Friday for 5C. Please, can a parent (or responsible adult) support the children by...testing them (written or oral), getting them to put their words into interesting sentences (written or oral), discussing the meanings of the words, thinking about synonyms and antonyms of that word, discussing words with a similar meaning etc.
- Reading – levelled home readers will be starting to come home soon. The children will be choosing levelled readers based on their own ability and are expected to read each night for at least 20mins at home with a parent. The children need to record their reading in their Reading Journals and parents can you please sign your child’s journal each night. Journals need to be returned to school each morning to be checked and will come home each evening (except Friday). Children may use Big Universe twice a week (only) as their choice of home reading.
- Mandarin Home Learning – All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.
WELLNESS THOUGHT OF THE WEEK…
