Year 5 Update Wk 8

Big Business Crafts – Miss Fearn has been working with small groups of volunteers during some lunchtimes to expose them to some craft ideas that they could use for their market stalls coming up in our Big Business UOI in Unit 4. This week we make pet monsters…..so cute!  How much would you pay for one?!?!?!  If you’d like to volunteer to help out please email Miss Fearn (I could really use some help with a few baking projects over the next month or so!)

5F Assembly – 5F have been busy rehearsing for their upcoming assembly which will be held on 27th October in the hall at 9am.  Can the children please all come to school dressed their house colours for the day?  Here are some snaps of our rehearsals…

UOI

Central Idea:

Human migration is a response to challenges, risks and opportunities.

Lines of Inquiry:

  1. The reasons why people migrate
  2. The challenges, risks and opportunities of migration
  3. The impact of migration on individuals and communities
Perspective Causation Change
Students will understand that groups of people have different views and opinions about migration Students will understand that there are causes and consequences of migration for people and society Students will understand that with change there will be challenges, risks and opportunities.
This week we continued our look into migration. We read some stories, real and fictitious and formulated appropriate and relevant questions to find out more.  We also looked into the lives of the teachers and drafted some questions.  This exposure to the many different types of migration stories is in preparation for heir own personal inquiry which we will begin in a couple of weeks.  We want the children thinking about a migration story that they are interested in and soon we will be finding-out more.
Christian Action – On Thursday we were lucky enough to have visitors in form Christain Action to talk about their migration story.  It was interesting to hear their stories of migration and how it differed from ours.  Leading up to this we really focus the children on formulating appropriate and relevant questions and most of them did a really good job to find out more on Thursday. Once again….one of these migration stories might be one that the children might like to find out more about for their own personal inquiry.
Here’s the Christian Action website if you’d like to find out more…

Number MathsImage result for addition and subtraction
Central Idea – Strategies for whole number computation can apply to fractional and decimal computation.
An inquiry into…
  • efficient mental strategies that can be used to solve addition and subtraction of decimal fractions
  • efficient written strategies that can be used to solve addition and subtraction decimal fractions

This week we had fun using our addition and subtraction skills to plan out a few balanced meals!

Strand Maths
Image result for measurement
Central Idea – Accuracy of measurements depends on the situation and the precision of the tool.
An inquiry into….
  • How tools and procedures can be used to measure accurately
  • How tools and procedures can be used to solve measurement problems
  • The connection between measurements and other units of maths (conversion)

This week we were measuring accurately (in cm and mm) and refining our skills with length.  We also looked at sides of shapes and discussed the different ways to calculate the perimeter and we began to start using informal formulae.  They always seem to enjoy perimeter work!

Visualising – Our reading focus has been on visualisation, a technique of developing imagery to help develop understanding. They have listened to a variety of extracts with the purpose of drawing what they have visualised. They have also looked at details from the text and the way it has been written, to help develop a broader understanding of context.
Narrative Writing – we continue on with our story writing this week.  5f focussed on finishing their initial fast-write and we also look at the strategy of ‘Show, don’t tell’ and had a go.

This week our Golden Book certificates were awarded to…

5C – Ricci Lee

5F – Alegra Baloch, Aggie Shum

5D – Clarice Yang

ICT – Yi Wing Chan 5D

homelearning

  • Read the Weekly Update
  • Mathletics – continue with the set tasks
  • Reading – keep up with their reading every night.  Don’t forget to get Reading Journals signed every night and children should be reading every night.
  • Spelling – each Monday the children are sent home their 10 personal words that they need to learn for the week.  Please, can a parent (or responsible adult) support the children by...testing them (written or oral), getting them to put their words into interesting sentences (written or oral), discussing the meanings of the words, thinking about synonyms and antonyms of that word, discussing words with a similar meaning etc.  Of course, you don’t need to do all these on all nights but it’s just a few ideas to help you along.  Buddy tests are held here at school each Friday and the children will then choose their next set of words.
  • UOI……There are a few bits to do so please read carefully!
  1. Personal/Family Migration – please make sure you have completed this (it was due this week!) so please get this in asap
  2. The Most Shocking Second a Day – please watch this video together with your child/parent and discuss www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBQ-IoHfimQ <– here’s the link but if it doesn’t link you through please just type in The Most Shocking Second a Day to youtube.  There is also a Part 2.  We would really like for the children to watch this with you at home as it sends an important message but may well be a little upsetting.  Can you please take the time to discuss their thoughts and feelings?
  3. Migrations of Interest – please can you take some time to write/record/put in a table/google drawing (it’s up to you!) some migrations from history (modern times or historical) that interest you. You will use this as the basis for your upcoming personal inquiry into migration.

Big Business Crafts soon enough our Big Business UOI will be upon us and in preparation for this Miss Fearn will be running some lunchtime activities on Big Business crafts. This year we are having a push for the children to make and sell handmade items at their stall or provide a service….rather than just buying bit and pieces from Shan Shui Po and re-selling these on the day.  Children can volunteer to join Miss Fearn at some lunchtimes throughout the weeks to learn to make some items that they then might make and sell on their stall.  If you have a simple craft idea and would like to come into school and teach a small group (15 children) how to do it please contact your class teacher and we will arrange for you to take a group.

Below are some CAMP TIPS to help you get your child ready for our upcoming week away on camp and please let your helper/guardian know these too so they can let them try out these things…..

  • please make sure they can make their own bed – including putting their own sheets on…it’s one of the first things they’ll be doing when we arrive at the campsite
  • ensure they can pack and unpack their own bag – this should be practiced each day when preparing for school
  • let them choose their own clothes to wear – get them to assess the weather and dress appropriately
  • make sure they know how to hang up their towel so that is dry for the next shower
  • make sure they can fill their own water bottle – especially if you decide to go for the Camelback type of water system with the hose…they need to have the dexterity and fine motor skills to be able to unseal and seal up the water bag themselves

Start of School Arrangements – Please note that students should not arrive at school before 8.30am. Teachers are on duty from 8.30am. Any child who arrives early cannot be supervised.

Healthy Living at BHS – We promote healthy living at BHS and therefore children should only bring water to school. Please do not send milk drinks, sugary drinks or any other kind of drink. We have water fountains and taps where students can refill their (BHS) water bottles throughout the day.

Some other points for your info:

  • Please avoid giving out sweets or lollies to students for rewards etc. If some are sent in for birthday treats, the children should put them away in their bags and take them home. We want to avoid students running around or going on buses home whilst eating lollies etc. I will remind the bus mums of this too.
  • The outside stairs can be slippery when wet. Please remind the children who use this staircase to take extra care.
  • We need one more volunteer to be on the PTA this year. Please let me know if you are interested. The first meeting is this Thursday at 3.30pm.

School Book Bags – Your child needs a named book bag in school to carry their reading books to and from school for both home readers and library books. This means that the younger children will need to remember their book bag every day.  It should contain their reading book, reading journal and on library days, library books.  The reading journal is an important part of the communication between you and your child’s teacher, therefore, please remember to add a positive comment when you have read with your child.

Guest Author – next week the Year 5s have a guest author coming in to talk to them about her book Gope and Meera – A Migration Story.  If your child would like to order or pre-order her book, here is the order form to print and bring into school.
