On Thursday we went to Hong Kong Park and, despite being hot, the children had a lovely time. Our students had the opportunity to develop their observational drawing techniques, look at meanings behind artistic creations, view features from different perspectives as well as having the opportunity to explore an art exhibition. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our parent/family volunteers who supported this excursion, it is very much appreciated. 5C have had their first meeting with their Year 1 buddies where they got to know one another through reading and playing games together.
Central Idea:
Artists can use a process to express messages and ideas
Lines of Inquiry:
- The tools and techniques artists use (form)
- How messages are interpreted and conveyed (perspective)
- How art influences others (reflection)
Perspective | Reflection | Form |
We will understand that artists draw on different experiences and thoughts when creating their work. | We will understand that artists use a range and mix of artistic elements to express their ideas. | We will understand that there are different elements of art which work together to create a work of art. |
- patterns and relationships of tenths and hundredths
- the patterns of 6+ digit numbers and how they are represented
This week students have been exploring what a decimal number is. This has involved looking at decimal equivalences and depictions, ordering decimals, as well as developing mental strategies to add and subtract decimals. Children have enjoyed explaining their thinking, sharing strategies as well as reinforcing their learning through practical games.
- creating, describing and visualising 2D & 3D shapes
- transforming shapes
- locating points on a grid
In strand maths children have enjoyed constructing 3D shapes from specific dimensions as well as developing their vocabulary to describe the properties of shape.
In reading we have been working collaboratively, in pairs and independently to make connections with texts. To add depth to their understanding of texts, children have been considering the following connections: text to self; text to text; and text to world.

Start of School Arrangements
Please note that students should not arrive at school before 8.30am. Teachers are on duty from 8.30am. Any child who arrives early cannot be supervised.
Healthy Living at BHS
We promote healthy living at BHS and therefore children should only bring water to school. Please do not send milk drinks, sugary drinks or any other kind of drink. We have water fountains and taps where students can refill their (BHS) water bottles throughout the day.
Some other points for your info:
- Please avoid giving out sweets or lollies to students for rewards etc. If some are sent in for birthday treats, the children should put them away in their bags and take them home. We want to avoid students running around or going on buses home whilst eating lollies etc. I will remind the bus mums of this too.
- The outside stairs can be slippery when wet. Please remind the children who use this staircase to take extra care.
- We need one more volunteer to be on the PTA this year. Please let me know if you are interested. The first meeting is this Thursday at 3.30pm.
School Book Bags
Your child needs a named book bag in school to carry their reading books to and from school for both home readers and library books. This means that the younger children will need to remember their book bag everyday. It should contain their reading book, reading journal and on library days, library books. The reading journal is an important part of the communication between you and your child’s teacher, therefore, please remember to add a positive comment when you have read with your child.
Part of our unit of inquiry involves conducting artist studies. As part of one of these studies, we will be doing some sculpting out of soap. In order to do these, we would like to request your child brings in their own bar of soap.
