Year 5 Big Business
Year 5 Market Day & Sharing Day
The Year 5 children have been busy creating some fantastic products handmade products to sell for their Market Day which will be held next Friday, 16th March in the hall from 11:00am – 2pm. All year groups will be visiting the market place during the day and we would suggest that the children bring around $80 to spend. Please note that due to the space available we can only allow the children and teachers to attend.
All profits from the market day will be donated to the Immanuel Kindergarten in South Sudan. This is a charity that Mrs. Quinn, one of our ex-staff members, has been involved in for a number of years. It is a charity that we have supported in the past and would like to support again, especially in light of the extremely difficult situation that many find themselves in South Sudan.
Book Drive
Hi, my name is Muchan, a Student Councillor for 5C. I am organising a Book Drive to help spread my love of reading. The Sony Corporation will collect books to create mobile libraries in South Africa for schools that do not have enough books. If you have books that are:
- Written in English
- Suitable for 6-12 year olds
- Have no yellow or brown pages (due to ageing)
- Have no missing pages
- Have no scribbles inside
- Not Textbooks
- Not magazines
- Not encyclopaedias
Please send them to school. There will be a collection box in the school foyer. Any books you can donate will be spread our love of reading.
Student Council Fruity Friday
- To have fun
- You perform in groups or solo
- Your dance should be around 1 minute
- heats for the competition will take place at various lunchtimes after Easter
- there will be a lower school and upper competition
You can support your child by helping them create and rehearse their dance.
Rugby Tournament
Well done to those children who competed in the rugby festival on Wednesday at King’s Park. The boys tried really hard and did really well to play so many games over the course of the afternoon.
P.E
In P.E the children have been considering the components of any game. Making changes to the rules of games they already know and in small groups they have made up their own games. The intention is that the children will work on these games, make adjustments and then share them with their Y1 buddies.
Big Business
The classrooms have been a hive of activity this week as the children prepare for the upcoming sharing morning and Market Day. We would like to express our gratitude for the support you have given the children at home by purchasing the materials they need and helping them to make their products. We are delighted to see so many of the children committed to getting their products ready.
Central Idea : There are many factors at work within a marketplace.
- functioning effectively as a team
- components in a marketplace
- research and marketing
Adverts and Jingles
Students and staff have been busy recording the group’s jingles and adverts which we look forward to sharing with the school over the next week and with parents on the Friday the 16th for Sharing Day.
Presentations
Some students have also been presenting their ideas to a panel of judges including Mr Harrison, Mr Pheasant and a couple of parents. The children were very nervous about doing this but demonstrated terrific confidence when they were speaking about their business. The panel was impressed by the range of products they saw and offered the groups some valuable feedback. A big thank you to those parents who gave up their time to be part of the panel.
The students have enjoyed taking part in the Mathletics Challenge this week for World Maths Day. They particularly enjoyed inviting their classmates to a maths challenge. We would like to encourage the children to continue to use Mathletics at home.
The accountants for the groups have been busy altering prices, updating their accounts and chasing team mates for receipts. They have also been working hard to ensure that they have a clear idea of projected profits and know what the basic cost of of their products are so that they can drop their prices accordingly if necessary.
Students have also been practicing fractions in mental maths sessions. They have been working on fractions of a quantity, simplifying fractions, ordering fractions, decimals and percentages, as well as finding equivalent fractions.
This week we enjoyed watching 3A’s assembly. As a result there was no Golden Book this week.
- Read the Weekly Update
- Mathletics – continue with the set tasks
- Reading – keep up with their reading every night. Don’t forget to get Reading Journals signed every night and children should be reading every night.
- Spelling – each Monday the children are sent home their 10 personal words that they need to learn for the week. Please, can a parent (or responsible adult) support the children by...testing them (written or oral), getting them to put their words into interesting sentences (written or oral), discussing the meanings of the words, thinking about synonyms and antonyms of that word, discussing words with a similar meaning etc.
- UOI – this is the final week for the children to get organised for Market Day. Children should be completing products, thinking about how they are going to display their products and bringing in anything from home that they would like to use. Children should also be working on their presentations to make any final changes and ensure they have adjusted their notes for what they plan to say during Sharing Day.
