BHS Dance Off
Our BHS Dance Off has been postponed until after Easter.  Our student council will be sharing more information next week.  Important things to remember for the Dance off are:
  • To have fun
  • You perform in groups or solo
  • Your dance should be around 1 minute
  • heats for the competition will take place at various lunchtimes after Easter
  • there will be a lower school and upper competition

You can support your child by helping them create and rehearse their dance.

World Maths Day is a free, fun, online competition with up to 4 million students world-wide participating. The competition measures speed in arithmetic and numeracy skills on our Live Mathletics platform and runs for 48 hours and is open to all schools around the world. Students compete online with other students and top scores are displayed on a live ‘Hall of Fame’.

Will BHS be the World Maths Day champion in 2018?

On Wednesday 7th March children will have the opportunity to take part in their Maths Lessons.  They will also be able to earn points until Thursday 8th March.  Encourage your child to have fun with Maths and take part at home.

As we were without the children for 5 days before the holidays, we have had lots of work to catch up on with our Big Business unit!

We’ve rehearsed our adverts…

and we’ve continued to make products.

It all looks very exciting for the big day!

UOI

Central Idea : There are many factors at work within a marketplace.

An inquiry into…
  • functioning effectively as a team
  • components in a marketplace
  • research and marketing
Concepts : function, causation, reflection
Related Concepts : business systems, costings
Learner Profile : courageous, communicator
Attitudes : cooperation, confidence
As we move deeper into our Big Business unit, our maths becomes even more cross-curricular!
We have been working out the difference between ‘cost’, ‘price’ and ‘profit’ and have been deciding what we should be charging for the products we have made. This has been a challenging way to develop our reasoning and estimating skills, as well as showing us how tricky it must be for business owners!
A couple of slides that show predictions for the big day! These may change and they differ for all groups.
Writing – Adverts and Presentations
Our English work this week again, took lots of many forms and each class has been working hard on getting on with their various stages of creating adverts and presentations. Group discussions, compromising, group decision making, careful listening, taking turns to talk and presenting were all themes and skills that worked on this week too.
Here are 5D working on some pitch presentations collaboratively, utilising google docs.
Reading Comprehension Strategy – Questioning
The questioning this week has centred around adverts. Those of you involved with our Student Led Conferences this week will know that we have been thinking about the audiences our adverts our aimed at and the way in which the directors have used different techniques to evoke different emotions.
Here are some of the adverts we looked at, as well as a link to the activity from the conferences.

Well done to all our Golden Book winners this week in Year 5…

5C – Austin Choi

5D – Alicia Wong

5F – Nova Yuen

Music – Garnet Lau

P.E. – Charmaine Mak

homelearning

  • Read the Weekly Update
  • Mathletics – continue with the set tasks
  • Reading – keep up with their reading every night.  Don’t forget to get Reading Journals signed every night and children should be reading every night.
  • Spelling – each Monday the children are sent home their 10 personal words that they need to learn for the week.  Please, can a parent (or responsible adult) support the children by...testing them (written or oral), getting them to put their words into interesting sentences (written or oral), discussing the meanings of the words, thinking about synonyms and antonyms of that word, discussing words with a similar meaning etc.
  • UOI – this week the children need to try and complete tasks started at school for their home learning.  Each group gets together daily and has many tasks that need to be completed within deadlines set by the class teachers. They need to try a and make a concerted effort to find out from their team what needs doing and get on and try and do it!  These could be a vast array of jobs, for example…..finishing logos, finishing designs, making prototypes, completing storyboards or scripts, shopping for materials (pls keep the receipt) and/or finishing parts of their Business Plan.
  • UOI – please check out the website of the school in Sudan that we are raising money for and discuss your parents the needs of the school that we learned about when Mrs. Quinn came to visit.  The website address is..www.immanuelkindergarten.org
