On Monday, in our assembly, the Student Council launched our BHS Dance Off.  This is a fun event for children who enjoy dancing.  We will hold heats after CNY during lunchtime where participants will have the opportunity to perform their dance.  If they are successful then they will perform their dance at the International Food fair. If your child is interested here is some useful information
  • have fun
  • you can perform in groups or solo
  • the dance should be around 1 minute
  • heats for the competition will take place at lunchtime after CNY
  • sign up sheets are in every classroom
  • there will be a lower school and upper competition

You can support your child by helping them create and rehearse their dance.

This week in year 5 the children have started their new PE unit ‘Playground Games’. The final aim of this unit is to design a game for our year 1 buddies. We have been looking at a variety of playground games to see which qualities and hazards we need to be planning for. 5C took their PE indoors due to the weather this week!

Year 5 also contributed players towards the 5/6 basketball team who played a friendly at RCHK this week. Although they didn’t win they had a great time. Well done to all involved.

UOI

Central Idea : There are many factors at work within a marketplace.

An inquiry into…
  • functioning effectively as a team
  • components in a marketplace
  • research and marketing
Concepts : function, causation, reflection
Related Concepts : business systems, costings
Learner Profile : courageous, communicator
Attitudes : cooperation, confidence
Children have continued their sharing unit work with Mr. Gibson in music. This week they were getting themselves into groups and experimenting with different instruments that they may use in their jingles.

They have also continued to work with Ms Heather to prepare for their adverts and scriptwriting. They were learning this week about dramatic, moderate and minimal acting and how each type can be used.
In the classroom, the children have been analysing the market research that they have gathered, developing final plans for the products they are making and deciding which resources they will need to create them. They have also started to divide up different responsibilities within the team.
Number Maths
Central Idea – Fractions, decimals and percentages are ways of representing whole-part relationships.

An inquiry into…

  • the relationship between decimal fractions and common fractions
  • the relationships between fractions decimals and percentages
  • problems involving ratios and proportion

In Maths the children have continued to develop their understanding and confidence when working with fractions, decimals and percentages. A focus this week has been placed on finding common denominators so that fractions can be compared. Here are 5F playing a fraction sorting game.

Strand Maths
Central Idea – Data can be presented effectively for valid communication
An inquiry into….
  • how data can be collected
  • using different scales on graphs and charts
  • how data can be interpreted.

In strand Maths we have been using the information we gathered from our Big Business surveys to investigate the different uses for bar graphs and line graphs. We talked about how graphs can be interpreted, the relationships between different values and the importance of representing them fairly.

Writing
Now that children have their products and brands more secure in their minds, they have been beginning to think about their adverts. They filled out some graphic organisers to help them create ideas, before starting to develop storyboards for their adverts.
Reading Comprehension Strategy – Questioning
The students have been developing their questioning skills and developing thin questions (where the answers are factual and written in the text) and thick questions (where the answers are inferred and can rely on outside knowledge or opinion).

Well done to all our Golden Book winners this week in Year 5…

homelearning

  • Read the Weekly Update
  • Mathletics – continue with the set tasks
  • Reading – keep up with their reading every night.  Don’t forget to get Reading Journals signed every night and children should be reading every night.
  • Spelling – each Monday the children are sent home their 10 personal words that they need to learn for the week.  Please, can a parent (or responsible adult) support the children by...testing them (written or oral), getting them to put their words into interesting sentences (written or oral), discussing the meanings of the words, thinking about synonyms and antonyms of that word, discussing words with a similar meaning etc.
  • UOI – Over this coming week, children should have a good idea of the product they are going to be making. In their teams they should have organised any items they need to buy to make a prototype and should have discussed who is going to buy it. We would also like the children to be on the lookout for advertising campaigns and commercials and would encourage them to discuss this with you.\
  • Music – Write 5 words in your group of threes of how your product feels, looks, tastes or sounds.

Mandarin Home Learning (All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.)

Ms Lynn – Please check your google classroom for details.

Ms Xu — Keep practising contents posted in google classroom .
